In recording terms, the daxophone first saw the light of day in 1987 on the LP (and re-issued CD) The dawn of Dachsmann.
The flat strips are approximately 330 mm in length, 30 mm wide and 5mm deep; they are shaped from different woods and with different contours to provide a variety of sound generators (Photograph 1).
Initially, any firm anchor was used, for example, by clamping to a table top, but more recently a tripod stand has been developed which not only holds the sticks in a more controllable environment but also provides a base for a small contact microphone (Photograph 2).

He claims to have invented the daxophone after hearing an LP of animal sounds and being impressed with the badger's great sonic range.
The Daxophone is a narrow flat strip of wood anchored at one end and which can be bowed, scraped, tapped or otherwise vibrated and whose frequency of vibration can be varied by the application of a mobile wooden block anywhere along the length.
Sometimes the daxophone, which can be extended with junk percussion and sampling, will come up with a tone that sounds like a wild boar accompanied by a chorus of sopranos, or alternately, a German beer hall band and a doo wop singing group mixing it up in a touristy café.

Essentially a stick, across which the player draws a violin bow, the daxophone is similar in some ways to a musical saw or the glass harmonica.
The daxophone is featured on a full-length CD, "Shanghaied on Tor Road: the world's first operetta performed on nothing but the daxophone" on the Free Music Production label.

Kazuhisa Uchihashi - a specialist on the guitar and daxophone, a modified string/wood instrument familiar to fans of Hans Reichel - was in Oakland on Larner's invitation for some gigs.
One of the keys to the music's success is surely Uchihashi's mysterious and highly pliable daxophone, with its uniquely wide range of sounds, from the moaning of sirens to harsh percussive plunks.
The convergence of Larner's prepared koto and Uchihashi's versatile daxophone with Leandre's nimble bridgework on contrabass occupies a similar sonic range, which makes for a cohesive result, Toward the end,...Leandre's arco passages are more dominant, causing the other two players to play more melodically.

Other non-Asian playing partners have included daxophone stylist Hans Reichel, violinist Jon Rose, and in the past he has recorded in duo with Bennett and in a larger group with the third R.U.B. member Ned Rothenberg, who plays alto saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet on this disc.
Brooklynite Rothenberg, who at one point early on had Bennett as a member of his Double Band, spent one protracted six month period in Japan during the early 1990s performing and studying shakuhachi with two of its foremost masters.

Hans Reichel [+]'s Lower Lurum [+] is perhaps the record that introduced the world to his invention, the daxophone, a box playing a long, thin altered board that produces so many tones and sounds they are virtually limitless.
Add to this Reichel's homemade guitars, which are truly exotic pieces of art as well as functional instruments, and you have an orchestra from another dimension.
Being subtitled as a "guitar and daxophone" operetta, in Reichel's mind there is probably a concept here.

Shanghaied on Tor Road is the first attempt by Reichel since he developed the daxophone to use it in a unified context.
What Reichel has accomplished here is create a series of tonal situations for his daxophone and followed them percussively down the path of the most resistance via a sophisticated -- if humorous -- method of composition, microtonal exploration, and advanced percussive investigation.
To say this music is tuneful is an understatement and does it a disservice, to call it funny in the best sense of the word is to do it a disservice, to say that it is innovative misses the point.
