He learns that the Earth of this period is ruled by the Daleks with the help of the Ogrons and human collaborators, whose leader is known as the Controller (Aubrey Woods).
Daleks and Ogrons arrive in pursuit, but are destroyed when Shura detonates his bomb.
The story became "Day of the Daleks" (sometimes incorrectly with an extra "The" at the beginning), the first Dalek story since "The Evil of the Daleks" at the end of the fourth season.

Daleks also have a radio communicator built into their shells, and emit an alarm to summon other nearby Daleks if the casing is opened from outside.
The Daleks were actually operated from inside by short operators who had to manipulate their eyestalks, domes and arms, as well as flashing the lights on their heads in sync with the actors supplying their voices.
Dalek, written by Rob Shearman, the sixth episode of the new series, was broadcast on BBC One on 30 April, 2005.

 Outpost Gallifrey: Reviews
'Day of the Daleks' was a fairly early video release in the UK, and ended up being a victim to the principle that familiarity breeds contempt; I watched it numerous times, got bored with it, and didn't watch it again for several years.
In summary then, 'Day of the Daleks' is a surprisingly low-key return for the Doctor's arch-enemies, an intelligent, thoughtful story that uses the Daleks sparingly but in a satisfying manner nevertheless.
Oddly, compared to later colour Dalek stories — where the first episode is a kind of foreplay building up to their orgasmic ‘surprise’ appearance (somewhat undercut by the title of the story, but never mind) — the Daleks are sidelined in “Day Of The Daleks”.

Dalek history has its root in the genocidal war between the Thals and the Kaleds, and begins with the creation of the Daleks in 'Genesis of the Daleks'.

In 'Day of the Daleks', the timeline after 1972 is an alternate one, dnoted by an "a" after the year.

Day of the Daleks by Alan Stevens with Fiona Moore
"Day of the Daleks" is the Dalek story which seems to get the least attention from fans, being neither a recognised classic along the lines of "Genesis of the Daleks", nor an out-and-out stinker like "Planet of the Daleks", and being impossible to reconcile with normal Dalek continuity.
The Daleks have a new colour scheme, as well as having a different sort of iris and extermination noise to the 1960s Daleks, although the change in colour scheme can be explained by their being part of a sort of Dalek High Council, or it being specific to the Daleks on Earth in particular.
As in "Genesis of the Daleks", then, the theme embodied by the rebels in "Day of the Daleks" is the problem put forward in Dostoyevski's The Brothers Karamazov: that it is impossible to build Utopia on the death of an innocent being.

Day of the Daleks by Louis Marks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Day of the Daleks is by Louis Marks, who also wrote the Hartnell story Planet of Giants.
Day of the Daleks is based on a clever idea: people from the future trying to alter history so as to avoid a catastrophe, only to find that it was their traveling back that caused the problem in the first place.
So Day of the Daleks is a decent story, even if the Daleks aren't necessary.

Day of the Daleks is, obviously, the exception to the general rule.
Many of you see the parallels between this and Dalek Invasion of Earth, I'm sure, yet by re-directing the focus away from the Hartnell story (shortening the length, altering the time period of the Daleks invasion, a script geared toward action and pace instead of characterization) an original work is created in the process.
In Day of the Daleks the audience is confronted with the terrifying situation of a Dalek-occupied Earth, an Earth in which as the Doctor puts it "human beings are only fit to live the life of a dog".

During a 1984 incursion into London, a Dalek creature, separated from its casing, attacked and killed a human soldier (Resurrection of the Daleks).
This contrasts with some of his earlier dealings with the Daleks; for example the Second Doctor attempted to instil a "human factor" in Daleks (The Evil of the Daleks) and the Fourth Doctor hesitated when presented with the opportunity to destroy the Daleks at the point of their creation (Genesis of the Daleks).

 THE DALEKS AND DAVROS
So the initial success of the Daleks came to be something of a ‘double edged sword’; ill-considered story lines eroded the central credibility of the Daleks as part of ‘Doctor Who’.
After all, the implication of ‘Evil of the Daleks’ was that there had been a conflict between the Doctor and, unbeknown to him, the Emperor Dalek from ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ through to ‘The Evil of the Daleks’.
The notion of changing the course of history by time travel was central to ‘Doctor Who’; perhaps the Doctor’s intervention in Genesis of the Daleks meant that Davros was usurped before he had (in the previous timeline) managed to modify the Daleks to acknowledge him as their Emperor.

The Doctor has described the Daleks as "little green blobs in bonded polycarbide armour." However, as the creature inside is rarely seen on screen, the misconception that Daleks are wholly mechanical robots exists, a mistake the series itself has made on occasion.
Early versions of the Daleks were either rolled around on castors or propelled by wheels connected to hand cranks by bicycle chains.
Remembrance of the Daleks also marked the last on-screen appearance of the Daleks in the context of the programme until 2005, save for charity specials like Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death and the use of Dalek voices in the Doctor Who telemovie in 1996.

After several years, perhaps as a result of the very long Dalek serials of the 1960s, someone realized that the Daleks take forever to utter a simple sentence, and so maybe someone more articulate would be better suited to that kind of exposition.

Another change to part four was the loss of dialogue establishing that all the Daleks infected with the Human Factor at the climax of The Evil Of The Daleks had been eradicated, indicating that that story was not the “final end” of the Daleks after all.
Day Of The Daleks then kicked off Doctor Who's ninth season when part one was transmitted on New Year's Day 1972.

New Year's Day 1972 brought forth the ninth season of Doctor Who, with episode one of the four-part "Day of the Daleks." The action commences when British diplomat Sir Reginald Styles (Wilfred Carter) claims to have seen a ghost at Auderly House.
Inasmuch as this sighting may well compromise Sir Reginald's efforts to avert a cataclysmic war between Europe and China, the Doctor (Jon Pertwee) and Jo (Katy Manning) are called in to investigate the diplomat's story.
