DVD Verdict Review - Days Of Wine And Roses
Days of Wine and Roses is a movie about the effects of alcoholism on one's personal and professional life, plain and simple.
Before Days of Wine and Roses was released, Jack Lemmon had been featured in lighter comedies that weren't by any stretch of the imagination considered "dramatic intensity." He shocked both critics and audiences with his portrayal of Joe Clay, a role that garnered the actor an Academy Award nomination.
Days of Wine and Roses is an excellent film that may be one of Lemmon's dramatic highpoints.

Though dated somewhat, Days of Wine and Roses (1962) remains an effective character drama, a cautionary tale about alcoholism, while exemplifying Hollywood's growing pains during the early sixties.
The story concerns a middle-executive PR man, Joe Clay (Jack Lemmon), whose unrewarding, high-pressure job of wining and dining clients (and frequently providing hookers for them) has turned him into an alcoholic, though he is unaware of this at first.
Days of Wine and Roses began as a 1958 episode of the classic television anthology Playhouse 90.

Whilst "The Days Of Wine And Roses" might take many of its riifs and melodies from a record like "Marquee Moon", there is no way at all in which one can say that it ever does anything better than copy it both in sound and production.
"Days Of Wine And Roses" I expected to be great: to say I was disappointed is an understatement.
What's especially exemplary about Days of Wine and Roses is that its bitterness is authentically jagged, nothing like the faux razor burn of mid-1980s bands like the Psychedelic Furs, groups that liked to parade their leather and stainless steel chain linkages to the underground right there on the covers of their recordings.

Theater News - Reviews: Days of Wine and Roses -
J.P. Miller's Days of Wine and Roses really must have been something when it was first produced on television in 1958 as part of the Playhouse 90 series (starring Cliff Robertson, Piper Laurie, and Charles Bickford) and then as a feature film in 1962 (starring Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, and Bickford again).
Although the program and press materials are unclear on the matter, this is a stage adaptation written by Miller himself some time after the property was presented successfully on TV and as a film.
Days of Wine and Roses is certainly timeless in that alcoholism remains a serious problem leading to a great deal of misery, but the Boomerang Theatre Company's strong staging would have been even stronger if it were more definite as to when the story is happening.

 Days of Wine and Rosés
The enjoyment of wine, by tradition, involves a prolonged process in which drinking is only one part of the ritual.
Like a surgeon preparing to operate, everything must be done just right, from the peeling back of the lead and drawing out the cork to the splashing of a dash of ruby fluid into a long-stemmed glass and swirling it to release the precious perfume.
Forget about flutes and flagons, when these fellows convene at Querro’s house, the wine is likely to be dispensed out of a dented beer keg into short ice-filled tumblers and gulped down with gusto.

I was never really interested in drinking alcohol and after catching "Days of Wine and Roses" on late night television I knew I was never going to drink, never get drunk, and never end up like the character of Joe Clay, played by the late Jack Lemmon.
I watched "Days of Wine and Roses" again last night and it is every bit as powerful and as horrific as I remember.

Grapes were first planted in the area in the 1850s near Yass, but the District began in earnest in 1971 when the first two (Clonakilla and Lake George) commercial vineyards were planted.
A plethora of grape varieties are grown in the region with Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillion, and Viognier the most common white varieties, and the reds represented primarily by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Shiraz.
Our district's wines are not mass produced, or homogenised highly commercialised styles, but rather are crafted to show off the region's distinctive fruit characteristics, and winemakers' visions.

UK Review: Days of Wine & Roses (Donmar Warehouse) (BroadwayWorld.com)
'They are not long, the days of wine and roses,' so insists Ernest Dowson's evocative poem that lends its title to J P Miller's bittersweet play.
First written in 1958 for television it subsequently transferred to the screen with Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick as the couple whose marriage is quite literally destroyed by the intoxicating power of drink.
Directed by Peter Gill, Miller's tale as filtered by McCafferty is both powerful and emotionally bruising, the close confines of the Donmar freshly emphasising the harrowing breakdown of the couple's once-close relationship.

This re-release of the Dream Syndicate's 1982 debut The Days of Wine and Roses, along with eight bonus tracks culled from obscure official releases, demos and rehearsal tapes, will hopefully go some way towards earning them some of posterity's wandering attention.
The Dream Syndicate were one of those bands who fell through the cracks: cultishly popular and critically acclaimed at the time, and undeniably influential since, but rarely discussed.
The expectations of others were not their fault, however, and the gorgeous songs on The Days of Wine and Roses still deserve a hearing in their own right.

The phrase "days of wine and roses" is originally from the poem "Vitae Summa Brevis" by the English writer Ernest Dowson (1867-1900).
Another Van-list member suggests that Van may be referring to the 1962 motion picture of the same name, about an alcoholic couple and how the bottle dominates and ultimately destroys their lives.
On A Night in San Francisco, Van uses the line "Lead me through the days of wine and roses, one sweet day at a time" - which combines the line with the recovering alcoholic's mantra, perhaps strengthening that interpretation.

While Days of Wine and Roses is certainly an effective warning tale about the dangers of alcoholism, it works dramatically for the same reason all great stories like this do: the central characters' relationships are made the foundation.
The downward spiral of Joe and Kirsten's affair leads to a simple but important conclusion, the final moment of which - a single line spoken in a white spotlight on an otherwise dark stage - is a haunting one of love, hope, and resignation.
