The Dayton Gems began with a bang in the fall of 1964.
Dayton was the host for several IHL All Star games due to the relatively large attendance that they attracted in their 5600 seat arena.
The Dayton Gems were the first adult team in North America to make the wearing of helments mandatory, long before the NHL adopted them.

In the playoffs, the Gems compiled a perfect 9-0 record, defeating Muskegon for the Turner Cup.
In the playoffs, the Gems whipped Muskegon in the semi-finals, then defeated Port Huron in seven games to win their second straight Turner Cup.

The IHL was an eight-team, two-division league in 1971-72 with the Komets competing in the South Division along with the Dayton Gems, Des Moines Oak Leafs and Columbus Seals.
Then came the storybook 1972-73 season which saw the Komets chase Dayton most of the season and overtaking the Gems with a 17-4-1 run the last six weeks of the season.
Dayton went on to beat Port Huron for the Turner cup.

By early 1974, rumors began circulating that the Gems were bankrupt.
Although hockey eventually left Dayton, Skilken's financial commitment to the Gems in 1974 enabled the team to survive another three years and win a third Turner Cup championship in 1976.

Weighill came to Dayton in early in the 1967-68 season, after spending three seasons in Muskegon.

The owner of Dayton's minor league soccer team wants to capitalize on the professional sports fever gripping the area.
John Tackis, president of Dayton Gems Futbol Club Inc., is seeking funds to build a 7,500-seat outdoor soccer complex near the Dayton Dragon's Fifth Third Field by 2005.
Dayton Gems Futbol Club already has about a dozen corporate investors -- including Arena Dodge, Franco's Restaurant, Pepsi and Kuempel Service of Cincinnati -- that have kicked in about 25 percent of the funds Tackis has raised.

Ouch, I haven't heard anything, but when we played the Gems always fielded good teams.
I will admit down in Athens we were not big fans of their teams, but it happens.

Dayton, Ohio - The Dayton Hockey Foundation today announced that the Ohio State Buckeyes and University of Denver Pioneers will join the Miami University RedHawks in the 2003 Lefty McFadden College Hockey Invitational scheduled for October 3rd and 4th at Wright State University's Ervin J. Nutter Center.
McFadden served as general manager of the former Dayton Gems hockey club, and is regarded as the 'Father of Dayton Hockey'.
In addition, the Dayton Hockey Foundation announced that not only will the Nutter Center host the Lefty McFadden Invitational, but it has also signed on as an event partner-and will assist the Dayton Hockey Foundation in event operations and marketing.

For the first time in its history, a college hockey tournament will be played in Dayton, Ohio when the Dayton Hockey Foundation and the Miami University RedHawk hockey team co-sponsor the Lefty McFadden Invitational on October 4 and 5, 2002 at Wright State University's Ervin J. Nutter Center.
The RedHawks and the Dayton Hockey Foundation have a three-year working agreement that will bring the tournament back to Dayton in 2003 and 2004.

The 10th choice, 142nd overall selection of the Boston Bruins in the 1973 NHL Entry Draft, Pettie is a graduate of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League's St. Catherines Black Hawks.
