Dbx debugger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
dbx is a popular, Unix-based source-level debugger found primarily on Solaris, AIX, IRIX, and BSD Unix systems.
dbx was originally developed at UC Berkeley by Mark Linton and subsequently made its way to various vendors who had licensed BSD Unix.
The dbx in Sun Studio supports programs compiled with the Sun Studio compilers as well as programs compiled with gcc and g++.

Then dbx adapted this process to develop a new family of products which you can use to greatly improve the dynamic range of music from conventional records and tapes as well as radio broadcasts.
Very simply, dbx went to the source of the problem: the actual cutting of the master disc from which records are eventually made.
dbx was attacking the remaining problems in reproducing sound that approaches the realism of a live performance.

 CTC Tutorial on dbx
As dbx executes your code, the current procedure, current file, and current line are all updated to relate to the line of source code previously executed.
Other dbx commands can then be used to examine the state of your program to determine the location of errors within your code.
If this happens, typing 'ignore 8' on the dbx command line before the program is run, will cause the program to run as it would without dbx, and report correct variable values.

The dbx debugger reads from /dev/tty when you specify the -r option and standard input is not a terminal.
Limitation: dbx will not work correctly when a shared library is added with the addobj command and the library is loaded at an address that differs from the address at which it was linked.
After invoking the dbx debugger, you issue dbx commands that allow you to examine source files, control program execution, display the state of the program, and debug at the machine level.

If dbx is run with no 'core' file in the current working directory, it will trace the variable from the main procedure.
