De Dion tube - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A de Dion suspension uses universal joints at both the wheel hubs and differential, and uses a solid tubular beam to hold the opposite wheels in parallel.
Unlike an anti-roll bar, a de Dion tube is not directly connected to the chassis nor is it intended to flex.
De Dion tubes are generally considered exotic and are rarely used.

De Dion-Bouton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
De Dion-Bouton was a French automobile manufacturer operating from 1883 to 1932.
The company was founded by Comte Albert de Dion (1856-1946), Georges Bouton (1847-1938) and his brother in law Charles Trépardoux.
In 1893 steam tractors were introduced which were designed to tow horse type carriages and these used an innovative axle design which would become known as the de Dion tube where the location and drive function of the axle are separated.

de Dion-Bouton was a successful French automobile manufacturer at the beginning of the 20th century.
The company was founded by Albert de Dion and Georges Bouton, who began building steam-powered automobiles in 1882.
These vehicles used an innovative de Dion tube semi-independent suspension rear axle, which was later used by other other manufacturers.

One suggestion, before we move on, is to cover the chassis tubes that run underneath the De Dion tube with plenty of insulation tape (or similar).
The De Dion tube will be resting temporarily on these tubes and may need to slide back and forth when the diff is removed.
The De Dion tube can also be carefully slid to the back of the chassis rails - or removed entirely (remembering to remove the brake pipes) if you so wish...

The De Dion tube semi-independent suspension was probably their most innovative design, adopted by a massive number of manufacturers.
Albert de Dion was the first to found an automobileclub (1895) and also organized the first ever motorshow (Paris 1898).
De Dion Bouton was not very active in motorracing, mostly building race-engines for other manufacturers.

De Dion tube - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The de Dion tube itself and the extra universal joints add unsprung weights compared to a fully independent suspension.
If coil springs are used then a lateral location link (usually either a Panhard rod or Watts linkage), plus additional torque links on each side (five link suspension) or a combination of lower trailing links and an upper transverse wishbone are required.
Rather than only a differential, an integrated drive component consisting of an AC electrical motor, 3:1 reduction, and differential action was mounted to the chassies.

The solution has been to design a De Dion installation that is built up with the standard Sierra componentry and which allows a choice of disc or drum brakes depending on the choice of engine and power output.
The De Dion model offers a significantly cheaper route to getting a car on the road but, such is the Rush's ability, the engine options go from a basic 1600cc four-cylinder through to the company's favoured Cosworth turbo and Rover V8.
This kit retains exactly the same chassis, double wishbone and De Dion suspension but is aimed at completion using the donor car's 2-litre OHC engine and gearbox to achieve a high quality sportscar with sufficient performance to warrant the fast road-tag.

The de dion rear axle is hold in its place by the watt linkage.
The watt linkage is mounted on the rear end of the dion tube on one side, and connected to the body on both left and right side of the car.
The original watt linkage is fitted with rubber bushes (silent blocks), which will flex and results in a sloppy rear and a delay in the ‘settling’ of the rear of the car during the entry stage of a corner.

On close inspection, we found that the De Dion tube was cracked almost all the way through on the off-side at the shock absorber mount.
The shock absorber is mounted into a tube that is welded onto the bottom of the De Dion, and it looks as though that weld has cracked at the most highly stressed point and grown from there.

The de Dion tube - not part of the London underground, but rather a semi-independent rear suspension system designed to combat the twin evils of unsprung weight and poor ride quality in live axle systems.
With this system, the wheels are interconnected by a de Dion Tube, which is essentially a laterally-telescoping part of the suspension designed to allow the wheel track to vary during suspension movement.
de Dion suspension was used mostly used from the mid 60's to the late 70's and could be found on some Rovers, the Alfa Romeo GTV6, one or two Lancias a smattering of exotic racing cars and budget sports cars or coupes.

It is reasonable to assume that Colin Chapman would have let Clive have the drawings he had done for the rear end, the rear suspension, de Dion tube and hub carriers because those made are very similar to the layout used on Colin's next car.
The rear of the frame was widened to accept the coilspring/damper units in a more upright position, and this made it quite difficult to thread the radius arms past the wheels to their position on the outer hub carriers.
The de Dion tube was made in three parts instead of being bent (as Colin had probably intended) and sideways movement was controlled by a block sliding in a channel at the rear of the tube.
