De Havilland Canada Dash 8 - QuickSeek Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
De Havilland Canada had invested heavily in their Dash 7 project in the 1970s, creating what was essentially a larger four-engine version of their famed De Havilland Twin Otter (or DASH 6), concentrating as always on excellent STOL and short-field performance, their traditional area of expertise.
De Havilland responded in 1980 by dropping the short-field performance requirement, and adapting the basic DASH 7 layout to be powered by two much more powerful engines.
The design was being introduced at a particularily advantageous time; most airlines were in the process of adding new aircraft to their fleet as the airline industry expanded greatly in the 1980s, and the older generation of feederliners from the 1950s and 60s were now ready for retirement.

De Havilland Canada was founded to assemble and sell British-made Moths, the light planes that did so much to make flying popular and accessible.
Military sales have been important to de Havilland, with the Caribou and Buffalo, but today the company is primarily a producer of passenger aircraft with its short-haul airliners, the Dash 7 and Dash 8.
Legendary figures are here, including Geoffrey de Havilland, Phil Garratt, Punch Dickins, C.D. Howe, Leigh Capreol, as well as many that are less well known, such as the Polish engineers who made an important contribution in the years during and immediately after the war.

Affectionately known as the Chippie, de Havilland Canada's Chipmunk was designed in response to a growing need to replace the Royal Air Force's ageing Tiger Moth two seat basic trainer biplane (described separately).
With a full design workload (courtesy of the revolutionary Comet jet airliner project among others) de Havilland decided to hand design responsibility for the new trainer to its Canadian subsidiary, de Havilland Canada.
Design leadership for DHC's first aircraft was the responsibility of W J Jakimuk who had emigrated to Canada from Poland in 1940 and was previously responsible for the design of the PZL 24 and PZL 50 Jastrab fighters and the DH.95 Flamingo airliner.
