DeKalb County, Alabama was established January 9, 1836 from land that was ceded to the federal government by the Cherokee Nation and is named for Baron Johann Sebastian DeKalb, an American Revolutionary War hero.
The county seat is Fort Payne, a name derived from the fort that was built during the forced removal of Indians along the Trail of Tears, as commissioned by Captain John Payne.
Troops, under the charge of General Winfield Scott, were sent to various points throughout Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia to build stockade forts and gather the Indians in preparation of their move west.

 De Kalb County, Indiana Genealogical Records Information
DeKalb County was organized February 2, 1837 becoming effective May 1, 1837, and was named in honor of the Baron DeKalb, a German Nobleman, who joined the American Army during the Revolutionary War, was made a General, and was killed in the Battle of Camden.
It is bounded north by Steuben, east by the State of Ohio, south by Allen and west by Noble County.
A disastrous fire occurred February 8, 1913, which destroyed part of the county records, among which were all the records of the County Clerk.
