Lancre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lancre (pronounced Lanker) is a fictional country from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.
Lancre is based mainly on the North of England (as in Lanc(ashi)re), but is reminiscent of many rural areas in Britain and elsewhere.
Lancre is famous for witches, especially since the publication of The Joye of Snacks (an erotic cookbook) by "A Lancre Witch" (Nanny Ogg).

Verence II of Lancre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Verence II of Lancre is a fictional character in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.
It is assumed that this means he is the son of the elder Fool's wife and Verence I (who was fond of exercising his droit de seigneur), and he is duly crowned Verence II.
Verence II is a very well-meaning king, who takes running a kingdom very seriously (he takes most things seriously, having learnt at a very early age that being a Fool was no laughing matter), but things seldom turn out the way he might want.

 Inquisitor - Pierre De Lancre

Pierre de Rousteguy, Sire de Lancre, was one of, if not the most vicious and ruthless of France's witch hunting magistrates.

Terry Pratchett - Carpe Jugulum excerpt
It was also said, although not by the people who lived in Lancre, that below the rim, where the seas thundered continuously over the edge, their home went through space on the back of four huge elephants that in turn stood on the shell of a turtle that was as big as the world.
There were never very many.[4] Lancre operated on the feudal system, which was to say, everyone feuded all the time and handed on the fight to their descendants.
A few other people in Lancre kept hawks and reckoned he was one of the best trainers in the mountains, possibly because he was so single-minded about it.

Heroes of the Gem - Lancre   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A late comer to the Heroes, Brother Lancre was appointed to proceed on the Quest of the Gem for largely political reasons, at the insistance of the Church of Mordant.
When Lancre was given rulership of one of the five Cantons of Slumber, he quickly established a haven for fellow Mordants to come and practice their religion, and Mordants did indeed come from far and wide, even as far as Lochnirr on the Isle of Onlor.
Although Lancre cannot claim title to Highest Brother of the Church of Mordant, he is certainly one of the more accomplished and respected Brothers and his deeds on the Quest of the Gem merely add to his stature.

Lancre is a fictional country from Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.
Most people, himself included, believe he is the son of Verence I. The capital "city" of Lancre is Lancre Town, by dint of being slightly bigger than the other villages, and containing Lancre Castle.
Much like the Unseen University Library, all the magic in the kingdom has warped space, leading to some areas containing more land than there's any room for (this is known as "gnarly ground").

Buber's Basque Page: Basque Mythology: Witchcraft
The massacres carried out by P. of Lancre and the Auto de Fe of Logroño constitute the finishing touch to the lower medieval(???) cycle of repression of the magic arts as much for the civil justice as for the Inquisition.
In the subsequent evolution of the judgement of the practice of witchcraft, capital importance was given, according to that revealed by J. Caro Baroja in diverse investigations, to the actions of one of the three inquisitors of the Court of Logroño during the Auto of 1610.
Caro Baroja brings to light the case of the faith healer Francisca Ignacia de Sorondo, who, in 1826, caused the City Hall of Fuenterrabía to extend to her a certification that guaranteed that she was not a witch.

Alphonsus de Spina, a Spanish Franciscan who was a convert from Judaism, became confessor to King John of Castille, director of studies of the Friars Minor at Salamanca, and was created Bishop of Thermopylae in 1491.
Pierre de Lancre (1553-1631) sent by Henry IV of France to investigate witchcraft in the Pays de Labourd, a Basque-speaking region in Southwest France, concluded that of the 30,000 inhabitants very few families, including most of the priests, were untouched by sorcery.
Pierre de Lancre, for example, observed that it was in the cauldron that the witches prepared every sort of poison for hurting or killing men and marring cattle.
