2000 De Tomaso Mangusta Car Reviews - The Car Connection
With its genesis in De Tomaso's exotic Pantera of the 1970s and the BMW-powered Guara racer of the past decade, this Mangusta rocket boasts a longitudinally mounted 4.6-liter V-8.
Alejandro De Tomaso was born in Argentina to a wealthy Italian family.
The appearance of De Tomaso's new limited edition roadster in the U.S. is somewhat of a surprise not only to the car-buying public but also to Alejandro himself.

In 1967 the take-over of Ghia was determining, and prototype 70P became Mangusta.
Very soon Alejandro De Tomaso realized that Mangusta was the right product to be sold in the United States; as a matter of fact, 250 cars were purchased by American customers.
All Mangusta cars were equipped with Ford engines, except this one ordered by the GM vice-president William L. Mitchell, who sent a Chevrolet engine to Modena.

 De Tomaso
At the age of 27, De Tomaso was already embroiled with his passion for cars and whilst living in Italy raced Maseratis and others for a period of around four years.
In October 1963 De Tomaso unveiled the Vallelunge Spider at the Turin Motorshow.
De Tomaso and Ford fell out in 1973 however and the company was forced to go it alone.

Known as the Mangusta, its name came from the Italian translation for mongoose, this appropriately having been one of the few mammals that could successfully deal with a cobra.
The Mangusta would take the firm into previously unchartered territory, De Tomaso's only earlier experience of road car manufacture having come with the diminutive Vallelunga of which barely 50 were eventually made.
Powered by a mid-mounted Ford V8, the Mangusta took De Tomaso from sportscars to supercars and in the five years between 1967 and '71, a respectable 401 were manufactured.

De Tomaso Mangusta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
De Tomaso Mangusta was a sports car from Italian automobile manufacturer De Tomaso between 1967 and 1970, replacing the Vallelunga model.
The Mangusta name was revived in the late 1990s and early 2000s when the concept car De Tomaso Bigua became the Qvale Mangusta, after a dispute between De Tomaso and business partner Qvale.
The Mangusta had a recent onscreen appearance as the car driven by Bill in the movie Kill Bill, Volume 2.

Their father's 30-year relationship with Signore de Tomaso helped pave the way for a licensing agreement signed in March 1998 with the Argentine-born former racer.
Then, when de Tomaso's company conceded it couldn't build the Mangusta in the required numbers, Qvale Modena bought a factory in which to assemble the car.
Since the resin-transfer-molded, plastic-bodied, boxed-steel chassis of the Mangusta weighs 234 fewer pounds than does the bigger Mustang, the 320-horsepower powerplant, with its 314 pound-feet of torque, delivers nearly supercar performance with the implicit promise of long-term durability from a mass-produced engine.

He had seen the Mangusta prototype at the Turin Show in the fall of 1968 and he asked Alessandro De Tomaso to build one for him, but not with a Ford engine.
He thought that De Tomaso, who had a notorious reputation for being underhanded had played some kind of trick on him.
The problem was that there were a number of key elements in the aesthetic and physical makeup of the Mangusta that could not be entertained by Chevrolet, thereby creating a very unfair comparison, the last thing that you need when you are designing a car.

 De Tomaso Bigua (Qvale Mangusta)
On the plus side, the new Mangusta had a unique feature - a flexible roof panel which could be completely stored or partly stored, thus the car could be either a Coupe, a Targa or a Roadster.
Although the Mangusta was 100 kg lighter than a Mustang, it still weighed a rather hefty 1450 kg.
Apart from engine, drivetrain and steering, Qvale Mangusta also employed a lot of Ford components in the cabin - the whole dashboard was supplied by Ford’s component division Visteon with all the switch gears and equipment pre-installed.

In 1968, a year after the introduction of the Mangusta, Ghia built a Mangusta Spyder.
A five-speed ZF transmission and limited slip differential were fitted, and top speed was claimed to be 'more than 150 mph', which was almost certainly optimistic, since the closed Mangustas were rarely capable of exceeding 145 mph.
Only one was built and De Tomaso sold it to a foreign businessman.
