 Gérard de Vaucouleurs, April 25, 1918–October 7, 1995 | By E. Margaret Burbidge | Biographical Memoirs
De Vaucouleurs returned to Le Houga in July 1941, and without abandoning his lifelong interest in Mars he turned his attention to the measurement of close double stars, variable stars, and the brightness variations of the asteroid Eros.
De Vaucouleurs continued his association with the Péridier Observatory in Le Houga, applying the research done for his thesis to light scattering in the Earth's atmosphere.
Therefore, it was natural that de Vaucouleurs should look at Frank Kerr's map of 21-cm velocity residuals across the Large Magellanic Cloud, and he was able to recognize the presence of a typical rotation pattern for a disk galaxy.

The de Vaucouleurs Revised Hubble Classification System
De Vaucouleurs' ideas on galaxy morphology were greatly influenced by the exhaustive survey (de Vaucouleurs 1956) he made of southern galaxies at Mount Stromlo Observatory between 1952 and 1955.
It was de Vaucouleurs' ambition to completely revise the Shapley-Ames catalogue by collecting as much information as possible on types, diameters, magnitudes, colors, etc., and by systematizing this information in ways that were homogeneous and standardized.
De Vaucouleurs viewed the use of cells merely as a convenience for the cataloguer and classifier, but favored quantitative techniques over these cells when such techniques became available.

Memorial Resolution - Gerard De Vacucouleurs
De Vaucouleurs received a Doctor of Science degree from the Australian National University in 1957, for research in molecular physics, optics, photography, astronomy, and astrophysics.
Gérard de Vaucouleurs was an observer who was meticulous with the data he collected and had an extraordinary knowledge of galaxies, recognizing hundreds of them by sight.
De Vaucouleurs found out about the accident and attempted to contact his former student by trans-Pacific telephone, but the nurses, apparently unable to understand his accent, would not let the call go through.

Jeanne d'Arc - Chapter II - Domremy and Vaucouleurs. 1424-1429. (by Mrs. Oliphant)
By degrees it came about that she could think of nothing else; and her little life was confused by expectations and recollections of the celestial visitant, who might arrive upon her at any moment, in the midst perhaps of some innocent play, or when she sat sewing in the garden before her father’s humble door.
He lived in Burey le Petit, near to Vaucouleurs, the chief place of the district, and Jeanne already knew that it was to the captain of Vaucouleurs that she was to address herself.
The young gentleman was Jean de Novelonpont, “surnamed Jean de Metz”: and so moved was he by the fervour of the girl, and by her strong sense of the necessity of immediate operations, that he proceeded at once to make preparations for the journey.

And she also said that she would go tell Robert de Baudricourt to have her brought to the place where my lord the Dauphin was.
Domrémy was no exception: as the church bells sounded the alarm, Jehanne and her family joined the other villagers in driving their herds to the safety of the walled city of Neufchâteau several miles to the southeast, where the family stayed at an inn run by a widow named La Rousse for a few days.
Vaucouleurs was besieged, during the course of which Baudricourt was forced to sign an agreement effectively taking him out of the war.
