Alone in the Dark (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The story is revealed to the player through an extensive series of books and notes found throughout the game, and is heavily influenced by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The occult tomes found in the mansion's library include the Necronomicon and De Vermiis Mysteriis, both taken from Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.
Other mythos references include books that feature the narrated history of Lord Boleskine, a direct reference to another Infogrames Cthulhu Mythos based game, Shadow of the Comet, and the last name of player character Edward Carnby, a reference to John Carnby, a character in the mythos tale, Return of the Sorcerer by Clark Ashton Smith.

They were unable to break Prinn through torture (one inquisitor commenting that Prinn was obviously insane, given his ability to withstand pain), and so threw him into a dungeon, where he would await trial.
It was during this period that Prinn wrote De Vermiis Mysteriis; smuggling out the original manuscript just days before his death by fire at the stake.
When the Gestapo finally came for him, he made sure De Vermiis Mysteriis would be forever beyond their reach; instructing his friend Hassler to secret his entire library forever.

This is an English language version of Ludwig Prinn's "De Vermiis Mysteriis".
It is not an actual translation of the Latin, but appears to be a transcription and annotation of Charles Leggett's 1821 volume "The Mysteries of the Worm".
If the reader is already familiar with "The Mysteries of the Worm" of "De Vermiis Mysteriis" then the book is worth 1D3/1D6 sanity and +2% Cthulhu Mythos.

We begin the ceremony as Marion instructed, acording to that described in his book, De Vermiis Mysteriis.
A fire is set in the fireplace and a pentagram chalked on the floor, marked with appropriate symbols and illuminated by two fl tapers placed near the center flanking the piece of amber with its entrapped spirit.
The warding signs so cheerfully carved by Marion Allen during better times--times that seem so long ago--apparently are effective and bar the thing entry except into the attic of the house.

Other books mentioned in the Lovecraft canon include the Comte d'Erlette's blasphemous Cultes des Ghoules, the unspeakable Unaussprechlichen Kulten of von Juntz, the chilling Cultes des Est, Ludwig Prinn's horrific Vermiis Mysteriis, the hellish Book of Dzyan, the demonaical Libre Eibonis, and the mysterious and sanity-shattering Pnakotic Manuscripts.
An interesting characteristic of Lovecraft's work is that goodness and nobility counted for little in defeating the dark forces arrayed against mankind.

There is a very interesting biography on Lovecraft as well, written by L. Sprague de Camp (a sci fi writer) who also compiled a volume of HP's non-horror writings in a book called 'To Quebec and the Stars'.
One thing i like about Lovecraft, is that he keeps referring to a bunch of books he himself made up, the most well known being "The Necronomicon" written by the mad arab Abdul Alhazred.
Others were "De Vermiis Mysteriis" and "Unaussprechlice Kulten".
