Giovanni Battista Vico - LoveToKnow 1911
Vico held God to be the ruler of the world of nations, but ruling, not as the providence of the middle ages by means of continued miracles, but as He rules nature, by means of natural laws.
Vico undoubtedly considered the poetic wisdom of the Middle Ages to be different from that of the Greeks and Romans, and Christianity to be very superior to the pagan religion.
Vico founded no school, and though during his lifetime and for a while after his death he had many admirers both in Naples and the northern cities, his fame and name were soon obscured, especially as the Kantian system dominated the world of thought.

 SEP: Giambattista Vico
Vico's earliest publications were in poetry rather than philosophy-the Lucretian poem "Affetti di un disperato" ("The Feelings of One in Despair") (composed in 1692) and "Canzone in morte di Antonio" ("Ode on the Death of Antonio Carafa") both published in 1693.
Vico satisfies this demand by distinguishing at the outset of The New Science between il vero and il certo, "the true" and "the certain." The former is the object of knowledge (scienzia) since it is universal and eternal, whereas the latter, related as it is to human consciousness (coscienza), is particular and individuated.
Vico observes that in the latter part of the age of men (manifest in the institutions and customs of medieval feudalism) the "barbarism" which marks the first stages of civil society returns as a "civil disease" to corrupt the body politic from within.

 Francescoe de Vico
One of these medals is in the museum at Georgetown University, U.S.A. Father de Vico left Rome towards the end of March, the political disturbances of 1848 making his stay impossible.
As de Vico's most important works may be mentioned: "The Discovery of six Comets" (see Poggendorff, infra); "The Discussion of the Rotation-period of the planet Venus".
De Vico's value was, however, justified, among others, by A. Muller (1898) and Belopolsky (1911).

 Giambattista Vico
Vico's Vita di Giambattista Vico is of particular interest, not only as a source of insight into the influences on his intellectual development, but as one of the earliest and most sophisticated examples of philosophical autobiography.
Vico composed the work in response (and indeed the only response) to a proposal published by Count Gian Artico di Porcía to Italian scholars to write their biographies for the edification of students.
Vico characterizes this movement as a "necessity of nature" ("Idea of the Work," §34, p.21) which means that, with the passage of time, human beings and societies tend increasingly towards realizing their full potential.

Vico establishes his metaphysics upon his own agonistic reading of two dialogues written by his first author, Plato: the Cratylus, and the Timaeus.  Vico cites Socrates in Plato's Cratylus as the source of his method to uncover true knowledge of being through the original names given to things.
Vico himself stresses the convertibility of another related pair of terms: punctum and momentum, point and motion.   Consistent with the critical role assigned to these convertible terms within Vico's metaphysics is the location of the discussion of punctum-momentum at the center point of the De antiquissima.
Thus all is determined by the pattern of systole and diastole: the atom, in motion within itself and without, as combined in the material elements; the movement of the human body and mind, in whole and in parts, internal and external; and the changes in civil society in the construction and destruction of community.

The Introduction à l'histoire universelle was in fact partly inspired by the anti-rationalist approach of the philosopher Vico who had proclaimed the triumph of the imagination over analysis.
It was in these years of his early thirties that Michelet seems to have begun to drift somewhat away from a previous acceptance of catholicism and royalism and towards more radical views.
His professorship, at the Collège de France of which he contended that he had never properly been deprived, was not given back to him.

Francesco de Vico (Rome, Italy) discovered this telescopic comet during a routine search for comets on 1844 August 23.09.
Even before an orbit was published, A. Berberich suggested the comet might be the same as de Vico's comet on the basis of the comet's location and direction of motion.
Interestingly, the likelihood of de Vico's comet of 1844 and Swift's comet of 1894 being identical had never been absolutely determined until 1965.
