De re publica - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
De re publica is a dialogue by Cicero, written in six books between 54 and 51 BC.
Cicero himself is responsible for a part of these translation and interpretation issues: in De re publica he emulates a dialogue by Plato, which since has become known as The Republic.
Sometimes "Res publica" is translated into Commonwealth, hence Treatise on the Commonwealth is a possible translation of the title too - this sounds quite British however.

Res publica usually refers to a thing that is not considered to be private property, but which is rather held in common by many people.
Ancient Romans would use the expression "Twelve Tables" instead of res publica, when referring to their constitution at the time of the "republic", and the "inalterable laws installed by the divine Augustus", for their equivalent of a constitution in the era of the early Empire.
Nonetheless in the second quote, actually preceding the first in the text of the Annals, "res publica" does not have such qualifier, while in the context it is clear he meant the then lost republican form of government.

Res Publica Party - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Res Publica Party (Estonian: Erakond Res Publica) was a political party in Estonia that self-identified as conservative and therefore member of IDC, but considering its vague platform for 2003 election, the genuineness of this ideology is disputed.
Established as a party on 8 December 2001, the political organisation Res Publica was founded already as early as 1989 and existed as a community of young conservatives, mostly associated with the Pro Patria Union party during the 1990s.
Res Publica is the largest party in the Riigikogu, with 28 of 101 seats, currently holding opposition.

 Abstract
Since critical religious discourse was in its formative stage at this relatively late point in Roman history, the writings of Cicero and his contemporaries were in a privileged position to validate, establish, or occlude the vast range of practices that made up Roman religious life.
The De Re Publica, like Varro's Antiquitates Rerum Divinarum, is not a passive curatorial gesture, but an act of Roman self-definition triggered by social crisis.
Enlisting Ennius in the De Re Publica project was doubly advantageous- he could not only be summoned as the singer par excellence of the mos maiorum but he had also translated Euhemerus' work on the apotheosis of primitive kings for a Roman audience.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 97.2.3
In the first place, his choice of Cicero as a starting point is a welcome (and relatively rare) recognition of the importance of De re publica for the Augustans and also of the extraordinary complexity of Cicero's work.
He rightly recognizes the problems of truth and irony raised by the interchange between Scipio and Laelius at 2.21-22, in which it is made clear that Scipio/Cicero both believes and does not believe in the portrait of Romulus as the ideal statesman.
The same circularity of approach affects the accounts of the Fasti and of De re publica; it is less troubling in his discussion of Livy -- but there, his readings are far less subtle or satisfying than those of Miles.

He comments "[s]ome have thought to infer that even wars fought de imperio should be defensive in character; Cicero was certainly capable of thinking in such terms [speeches cited to this effect].
Commentaries like this (and Zetzel's on de Re Publica), which pay scrupulous attention to working out the arguments of Cicero's treatises on both large and small scale, give the casual reader of these works much surer footing in using them to construct their own arguments.

Cicero's De re publica contains the fullest ancient account of the theory of the mixed constitution and the oldest extant narrative of early Roman history; it concludes with the Dream of Scipio, one of the most influential ancient visions of the afterlife.
The argument of the dialogue concerns the relationship between political theory and practice, and between social institutions and the individual citizen.
This edition of most of the surviving portions of De re publica is the most detailed commentary ever to appear in English.
