Topic: DeDion axle

Swing axle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Swing axles have universal joints connecting the driveshafts to the differential, which is attached to the chassis.
Swing axle suspensions traditionally used leaf springs and shock absorbers.
Swing axles were supplanted by deDion axles in the late 1960s, though live axles remained the most common.

Independent suspension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is contrasted with a beam axle, live axle or deDion system in which they are linked - movement on one side affects the wheel on the other side.
Independent suspension requires additional engineering effort and expense in development versus a live axle or beam axle arrangement.
The key reason for lower 'unsprung weight' relative to a live axle design is that, for driven wheels, the differential unit does not form part of the unsprung elements of the suspension system.

 IRS - Dedion Axle
The purpose of a DeDion axle is to rigidly attach the wheel hubs, whilst allowing the final drive assembly to be attached independently.
Within the axle, a sliding joint is incorporated to allow for variation in the wheel track during suspension movements.
A major advantage with using a DeDion axle is that it reduces the unsprung suspension weight at the rear; especially if inbound brakes are fitted.

 Dave's Caterham Page - Suspension
The wheels are bolted onto the end of the axle with the drive shafts inside the axle.
Since the wheels are bolted to a solid axle their camber is unaffected by the weight of the car (the whole axle moves up or down) but under cornering the inside wheel will take a less negative camber - i.e.
It is similar in operation to the live axle except that it has a much reduced unsprung weight (the half-shafts and diff are heavy!).

 Re: DeDion
Hi Kyle: A deDion suspension hopes to combine the beat aspects of both a solid rear axle and a fully independent rear suspension.
In a system such as on a Spider, with a solid rear axle, both wheels are always exactly parallel to each other, and hopefully always perpendicular to the road, both of which are good things.
The bad part is that the entire mass of that axle (including the wheels, tires, brakes, etc.), and all the components that hold it to the chassis (like the trunnion, trailing arms, etc.), have to move together.

 AutoZine Technical School - Suspension
DeDion axle suspension has much less unsprung weight because the final drive / differential and driving shafts are not rigidly attached to the wheels.
The wheels are interconnected by a DeDion Tube, which has a sliding joint to permit wheel track variation during suspension movement, this help refining ride quality too.
The DeDion tube keeps both wheels parellel to each other under all conditions, so they are always perpendicular to the road surface regardless of body roll.

Caterham Cars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The model was launched following the success of similar models from Lotus, with the Elise, Mazda and MG, however while a good car, the 21 never sold particularly well and was killed off after only a few years.
The old school Caterham that used to have a live rear axle that is generally believed to have a poorer handling on rough roads.
An updated rear suspension with a deDion axle and optional Watts linkage, paired with an adjustable anti roll bar allows for a more detailed control of the rear wheels during heavy cornering.

Usually, the center pivot is mounted to the chassis, behind the differential, and the horizontal arms are mounted to the solid axle.
deDion axles are certainly looked down upon as a lesser system, but on the positive side they are easier to set up than IRS and they are fairly light.
It has all of the advantages and disadvantages of a live axle except you don't have 100lbs+ of differential, housing and axles as unsprung weight.

Grabercars.com - Home of 'La Bala' - IRS vs DeDion Rear suspension
But unlike a traditional live axle, the differential is not carried on the axle and is not part of the unsprung weight.
The interaction between the driven wheels and the chassis is an extremely complex one, the car pitches and dives and rolls and with IRS under bump or droop the driven wheels change camber and toe.
The beauty of the deDion is it's ability to maintain the driven wheels perpendicular to the road surface under all conditions.

In contrast, with a DeDion or live axle the wheels lean as the car rolls, this causes it to break away earlier but is much more progressive and controllable.
You also have the benefits of lower unsprung weight and a wider choice of diffs and shafts etc. Fitting a de-dion axle is not much different to fitting a live axle either, especially if you use a prefabricated axle like the one which GTS offer very cheaply.
My opinion (for what it's worth) is that unless you want to go for a full IRS setup then de-dion is the obvious choice and live axles, while perfectly fine, are becoming rarer by the day and not worth bothering with unless you are competing in a racing class which specifically requires them.

With a live axle, there are no universal joints between the wheels, they are connected directly to the differential.
With a DeDion axle, the left and right wheels are still connected by a rigid beam, but the differential is mounted to the body, with twin universal joints each side.
The DeDion axle is the superior design, and the one I have tried to model.

To cars as slow as VW Beetle, swing axle shows its advantage in ride comfort over contemporary non-independent suspensions while the weakness in handling is not easily seen.
That came true when the 911 launched in 1963, used trailing arm at the rear instead of swing axle.
Body roll and wheel's movement lead to variation in camber, although not as severe as swing axle suspension.

Consequently, there was a solid housing between the differential and the rear wheels in which the axle halves spun).
These are called "live axles." But on a front-wheel drive car, the rear wheels are there pretty much just to hold the back end of the car up...and most of the time this is done with independent rear suspension (such as McPherson struts, which is what the Prius appears to have, A-arms, etc.).
There are other types of rear axle, like swing axles and the DeDion axle, but they're not too common.

Designed by Count De Dion, the axle was mounted to a vertical track and slides up and down it.
However, a live axle has too much unsprung weight, and leads to poor ride quality.
The DeDion tube keeps both wheels parallel to each other under all conditions, so they are always perpendicular to the road surface regardless of body roll.

Yes the Milano axles are the same as the GTV6 with the exception that those Milanos with ABS have a pickup mounted close to the hub area to read the sensor ring on the ABS hubs.
You would have to swap that if you found an Alfetta axle, but it would be wise to put a new center bushing in no matter what axle you use.
I think the linkages need to be straightened out to sort this problem( r they of the same length?) FOr this matter, can someone advice if the central pivot swivel(Watts linkage mounting) is in the vertical position when the car is lifted on the hoist(ie wheels unloaded).

1,6 complete DeDion axle in a 2,0 TS - Alfa Romeo Forum
I just bought a slightly damaged 75 2,0 TS and the main problem was finding a 2,0TS donnor for the damaged DeDion axle.
But yesterday when surfing trough the net I found an information that said that the 2,0 axle is a bit wider than the 1,6 one.
I think the de-dion tube is the same for all cars, the change in track is due to different offset for the wheels for the different models.

 Infiniti Suspension - Partstrain.com
Normally, a dependent suspension features a live axle or simple beam that holds the wheels to stay parallel with each other and at the same time, perpendicular to the axle.
However, there is also the so-called semi-dependent suspension system that makes use of jointed axles on drive wheels but is usually linked with a strong member often called deDion axle.
And finally an interconnected suspension is one which is mechanically or hydraulically interconnected system that is used for enhanced compromise among vertical roll and pitch properties.
