Jackson DeForest Kelley (January 20, 1920 – June 11, 1999) was an actor best known for his starring role as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy of the USS Enterprise in the television series Star Trek and six of its subsequent movies.
Kelley was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Ernest David Kelley (a Baptist minister) and Clara Casey, delivered in their home by his uncle, a prominent local physician.
As a child, DeForest Kelley sang in the church choir, where he discovered that he enjoyed singing and was good at it.

Whether this undercurrent of familial hostility is the result of some background that was dropped from the film or personal animosity between Kelley and Kelly is hard to tell.
Unlike his appearance (DeForest must have gotten the same deal as Dick Clark), Kelley's acting style changed a good deal after his film debut.

Deforest Kelly steals the film with the charm and wit that makes McCoy such an endearing figure and the actor’s death such a loss to Star Trek.
There are many moving scenes to be found here: The death of Kirk’s son, Spock’s reunion with his friends, but perhaps the most startling is the destruction of the good ship Enterprise.
I was further touched by the loss of Deforest Kelly and the impending loss of James Doohan.

Leonard McCoy several years before he became Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, chief surgeon and diagnostician of the U.S.S. Enterprise.
Well, at least the actor really is DeForest Kelley, albeit a somewhat prehistoric incarnation of this fine actor who appeared in movies and television for close to 20 years before becoming one of the most recognizable doctors in the known (and unknown) universe.
