The DHC-6 Twin Otter is a 20-seat STOL feederliner and utility aircraft developed by de Havilland Canada.
Twin Otters could be delivered with floats, skis, or tricycle landing gear direct from the factory, and they became popular bush planes in Alaska and northern Canada.
In Norway, the Twin Otter paved the way for the network of short-field airports, connecting the rural areas with the larger towns with outstanding reliability, and remained in service until 2000 on certain routes.

 DiverDriver.com: Twin Otter
The Twin Otter is probably the most versatile jump aircraft in the turbine world.
The trick to flying Twin Otters with jumpers is that you always take-off heavy and land empty.
With good crosswind technique the pilot should be able to run the aircraft down the runway as though the tiller bar was not even there until it is necessary to turn off the runway.

Success with the DHC-2 Beaver persuaded de Havilland Canada, in the late 1940s, that there was room in the STOL utility market for a larger version of the Beaver, with cabin space for some 14 passengers or a freight load of up to 2,240 lbs.
The company therefore developed the DHC-3 Otter, (which was initially known as the King Beaver).
The DHC-3 Otter was powered by one 600-hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340-S1H1-G Wasp radial piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed at sea level of 153 mph, maximum cruising speed of 132 mph, economical cruising speed of 121 mph, service ceiling of 18,000 feet, and a range with 2,100-lb.

This weight may be transported up to a maximum 280 miles roundtrip by a medium lift helicopter (such as the Bell 212), or over 600 miles roundtrip by the DeHavilland Twin Otter airplane.
Of course, the amount of equipment that can be transported during any single flight is a function of the distance of the site from the ship.
These particular helicopters can carry up to 4 passengers and have a stated payload (fuel and cargo) of approximately 675 kg (1500 lb), so several flights were needed to transport a single ITP system, deployment apparatus, and personnel.

Some years after his celebrated 1953 flight in the Douglas D-558-2 Skyrocket at 1,320 miles per hour, Crossfield joined Miami-based Eastern Airlines as an executive, whereupon he volunteered for the Greater Miami Chamber Aviation Action Committee, of which I was chair, to add his expertise.
With an eye for drama, Crossfield borrowed a high-wing, 18-passenger DeHavilland DHC-6 twin-engine turboprop Otter, a STOL aircraft popularized by bush pilots, for demonstrations that seemed like stunts, but were to prove Crossfield's point.
Otter's slow, steep landing approach with double-slatted flaps, jackrabbit takeoff climb and reversible propellers allowed operating in less than 1,500 feet and landing at under 100 miles power hour.

A short take-off and landing capability that enables the aircraft to be operated in its wheel, ski or floatplane configurations from unprepared, confined, areas at pressure altitudes ranging from sea level to 10,000 feet under all climatic and geographical conditions, a capability unmatched by any other aircraft of comparable gross take-off weight available today.
The 1000 horsepower ASz-62IR-M18 engine has been specifically adapted for the Otter by incorporation of a dry vacuum pump drive, five point cylinder priming, custom air intake and carb heat system, and internal modifications to the fuel pump.
The Otter's distinctive exhaust and augmenter tubes are also removed and replaced by a single stack exhaust manifold.
