Davis ran second to "Chep" Morrison, considered a liberal by Louisiana standards, in the primary and then defeated him in the party runoff held in January 1960.
Davis won the northern and central parts of the state plus Baton Rouge, while Morrison dominated the southern portion of the state, particularly the French cultural parishes.
In the runoff, Davis prevailed, 487,681 (54.1 percent) to Morrison's 414,110 (45.5 percent).

The collection consists of papers accumulated by deLesseps S. Morrison during the time he was ambassador of the United States to the Organization of American States (OAS), from 1961 - 1964.
They were separated from the complete collection of Morrison papers in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of the Tulane Library.
Letters dated May, 1962, sent from a Cuban in Cuba to radio station WWL in New Orleans on the revolution which he calls a revolution "for the worse" and describes the conditions of ordinary people.

Maestri and the Longites had reached a deal with mobster Frank Costello whereby the city would ignore slot-machine laws in exchange for a cut of the proceeds, so prostitution and illegal gambling flourished in New Orleans under Maestri’s tenure.
The growing problems of New Orleans in Maestri’s second were too much for the Old Regular machine to handle, and allowed young reformer deLesseps Story Morrison, Sr., to defeat Maestri in the mayoral election of January 1946.
Maestri’s lack of education and earthy, unpolished manner of speaking made him a frequent subject of humor and ridicule.
