  The DeLisle carbine
The carbine design was conceived at Dagenham (the Essex home of the Ford Motor Company) by William G. de Lisle and Sir Malcolm Campbell (famous World Land and Water Speed record contender and holder, and father of Sir Donald Campbell) specifically for covert operations, such as those organised by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE).
Being largely deLisle's project, the carbine was prototyped by his team at Dagenham and subsequently manufactured, by Sterling Armament, in numbers probably rather less than the originally contracted figure of five hundred; it has been suggested that as few as 120 were forthcoming.
The manner in which, on many of the carbines, the bolt was shortened and the breech-end of the barrel brought rearwards into the original.303 receiver of the S.M.L.E. No.1 being converted, is reminiscent of the configuration of the post-war training and target Enfield Rifle No.8.

The Dispatch - Serving the Lexington, NC - News   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The carbine was originally a lighter, shorter rifled weapon developed for the cavalry, for whom a full-length musket or rifle was too heavy and awkward to fire from horseback.
Shorter rifles, shorter carbines: World War I and World War II In the decades preceding World War I, the standard battle rifle used by armies around the world had been growing shorter, either by redesign or by the general issue of carbine versions instead of full-length rifles.
The primary advantages of a pistol caliber carbine are increased accuracy due to the buttstock or shoulder rest, higher muzzle velocity and energy of a longer barrel for increased wounding potential and penetration, and the ability to add accessories such as night scopes, tactical lights, and/or laser sights.

For suppressed weapons with a longer range, the DeLisle Carbine in.45 ACP, or the Sten Mark IIS and VIS submachine gun were used.
The DeLisle carbine was manufactured using an Enfield bolt action receiver fitted with a modified Thompson submachine gun barrel and a magazine well that would accept modified M-1911.45 magazines with a capacity of seven rounds.
There are also some references to a suppressed M-3 Submachine Gun (grease gun) in.45 ACP being fielded, as well as references to a suppressed M-1 Carbine being tested in WW II.

Marko was surprised and somewhat sceptical when I told him that it was unnecessary to modify his carbine for shooting of 7.62 x 39 mm Ye and S (Kalashnikov) M-43 cartridges, because that old rimmed 7.62 mm Mosin cartridge can be handloaded to become equally silent.
DeLisle gun was somewhat overly complicated: Powder gas bleed apertures through the bore walls were unnecessary, because of inherently subsonic muzzle velocity of.45 A.C.P. cartridge).
Overall length of silent carbine with 500 mm barrel is slightly more than that of Marko's 7.62 x 39 mm "rifle", but not yet excessive, like the length of Mosin -91/30 with S-40 muzzle-can.

It uses the stock and action of the Lee Enfield #3 Mk 1 rifle, this is combined it with a.45 caliber barrel and the magazine from the Colt M1911A1.
The weapon's designation was later changed to Karabiner 43, abbreviated K 43, although the weapon really wasn't a carbine; it was envisioned to replace the Mauser Karabiner 98k as the standard infantry rifle.

It is interesting to note that, although we have come a long way in suppressor design, the Mk I Hand Firing Device (.45 ACP) is still the standard by which modern suppressors are compared.

First off it wasnt a "sawed-off Enfield", it was a DeLisle Silenced Carbine.
The DeLisle was a silenced.45 cal carbine that had a modified Thompson barrel, an Enfield bolt, and a pistol clip loading mechanism from an M1911 Colt.45.
The DeLisle was bolt-action, but not very accurate due to the use of pistol ammunition and a silencer (silencers=lower accuracy due to it vibrating and throwing the bullet off track a little).

The carbine was designed with the Lee-Enfield bolt action mated to the barrel of a Thompson submachine gun fitted with a Maxim silencer chambered for the.45 ACP cartridge fed by a Colt M1911A1 magazine.
The silencer was of such size to muffle most of the subsonic.45 bullet, and the bolt action was much more silent and accurate than the operation of automatic weapons.
The only sound made by a Delisle carbine was the little "ping" of the firing pin as it struck the bullet primer.
