DeWitt Clinton Cregier (born: June 1, 1829; died: November 9, 1918; buried in Rosehill Cemetery) served as mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1889-1891) for the Republican Party.
Cregier was also a Master Mason and a Masonic lodge in Wheeling, Illinois is named after him.

Cregier was the direct descendant of Martin Cregier, in fact his great-great-great-great-great-grandson, who was a native of Toulouse, France, a Protestant refugee, went from there to Borcken, Holland and thence to New York City, N.Y. in 1653.
D.C. Cregier was orphaned at the age of 13.
D.C. Cregier was one of the founders of the Masonic Veterans Association and chairman of the Jurisprudence Committee.

Cregier, as the burgomaster of New Amsterdam, was placed in charge of the Esopus militia shortly after the massacre.
The issuing of a township patent and name was perhaps viewed as a matter of governing convenience, since both Marbletown and Rochester were well inhabited upon their establishment as townships.
The church was a major factor in the social organization of the early community and the Dutch Reformed Church was the only organized religion available during the early development of the area.

The "small hornworks" were at North Front street and Clinton avenue; at about North Front and Green streets; at the corner of Main and Clinton avenue and on Green street at the head of John.
Dominie Blom, in his description of the Indian attack upon Wildwyck in 1663, says, "The houses were converted into heaps of stone." The dominie is speaking metaphorically.
Captain Cregier's journal of the Indian war of 1663 mentions some Catskill Indians being near "Sagers Kill." This stream, called the Saw kill or Sawyers kill, is in the northern part of the town of Saugerties and empties into the Hudson near the mouth of the Esopus creek at Saugerties village.
