The population steadily increased to 10,082 in 1880, 14,307 in 1890, and 21,311 in 1900.
This trend intensified in the early twentieth century, as the population of the county rose from 23,501 in 1910 to 27,941 in 1920.

Texas Cavalry.  During my service in said war I saw the said S. Calhoun in service in the Confederate army near Bellbuckle Tennessee, and from conversations had with said S D Calhoun since said time I feel certain that his statements as to his service are true.
The records of this office show S. Calhoun of Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas executed an application for Confederate Pension in Texas, on January 26, 1914.  At that time he stated he was 79 years old on August 17, 1913 — born in Tennessee.  Exact date of birth is not given.
Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army and served until May, 1865.  He stated he was taken prisoner near McMusville, Tennessee and taken to Camp Matten, Indiana and paroled in 1865.
