The fact that "Dead Calm" had me in its grip until its final seconds was proof enough for me that I had not heard the last thing of these actors.
"Dead Calm" succeeds entirely, and although certain elements are predictable, the film never loses its tight grip and tension and there are more than a few unexpected turns that take viewers by surprise.
"Dead Calm" was originally shot using anamorphic lenses and film material and given the nature of the film and its location on sea with a clearly defined horizon, barrel distortion that comes with the usage of such anamorphic lenses is evident in certain scenes on this DVD.

Phillip Noyce's Dead Calm (1989) is a masterful Hitchcockian exercise in audience manipulation.
Within the film's dramatic opening moments, in which the child of Rae (Nicole Kidman) and John (Sam Neill) is killed in a motor accident, Noyce executes a slow dissolve from the heart-wrenching image of a traumatised Kidman to the soothing, calm waters of the Pacific Ocean.
A dead crew is harboured within his sinking boat - a mystery that John discovers soon after Hughie's acceptance onto Saracen - the boat John shares with Rae.

The key image of "Dead Calm" is of two ships drawing near each other in the middle of a vast, empty expanse of ocean.
The emotions generated by this shot, near the beginning of the film, underlie everything that follows, making us acutely aware that help is not going to arrive from anywhere, that the built-in protections of civilization are irrelevant and that the characters will have to settle their own destinies.
And yet "Dead Calm" generates genuine tension, because the story is so simple and the performances are so straightforward.

Although I was familiar with Sam Neill at the time, mostly from crap performance of Damien in Omen III: The Final Conflict, Dead Calm was the movie that really brought Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane to my attention for the first time.
Dead Calm is typical of the unrealistic trash that director Phillip Noyce (look at Bone Collector, Patriot Games, Sliver!) usually delivers in that it is completely ludicrous in its ending.

The result is "Dead Calm," an intense thriller that will leave you adrift in suspense for 90 minutes.
Kidman's performance is top notch (future husband Tom Cruise claimed this was the film he saw that made him want her to co-star with him in Days of Thunder) as a fragile wife turned quick witted would-be victim, while Zane is as great as you'd expect him to be in a role like this.
Though it does drag a bit here and there, Dead Calm is masterfully crafted and one of the best suspense films ever made, and if you're into thrillers and you've never seen this film; well then, you've been missing out.

Beginning early with some big thumping kick drums, smooth atmospheric effects and chirpy melodies are incorporated early, and they soon build into a big deep rolling baseline that gets the track grooving very nicely.
