Dead Can Dance share some similarities with Cocteau Twins, Bel Canto, Sheila Chandra, Ingrid Karklins, Loreena McKennitt, among others, but they're also distinctly different to all of these artists.
Over time they have moved from medieval and dark (within the realm, serpent's egg, spleen and ideal, dead can dance) to more renaissance (aion), then most lately world music and folk (into the labyrinth, toward the within, spiritchaser, though these albums are mixed with the other genres).
An excellent new addition to the Dead Can Dance catalogue, but definitely not their best effort (I'm still partial to Spleen and Ideal and Within the Realm of a Dying Sun).

Their music is a mix of rhythms from many different cultures, but we can always recognize DCD way of playing in any piece of their songs, among Arabian, Hindus, Medieval, Gothic and classical music.
DCD's Indus percussion in "Between Love and Lucidity" gives a spiritual feeling to it I can't describe just like the VAS percussion in "Concubine...", like if the songs were completely recreated, and got nothing to do with the songs which they were originated from.
This one is much similar to DCD when it concerns to the classical and ancient kind of music, since Arcana doesn't sound that "tribal" or middle-east as DCD ofenly does.

Utilizing traditional instruments in untraditional combinations, Dead Can Dance have created a sound that is distinctly their own, and instantly recognizable.

Early Dead Can Dance fans often enjoy the first three albums in rotation with the omnipresent The Cure and the vocally similar Switchblade Sister.
Latter DCD fans often enjoy a rotation with Enigma and Cocteau Twins, although I believe the band itself would eschew such bucket selections, as their own musical growth and trajectory are what made them distinct in the first place.

THE SPIRIT OF DEAD CAN DANCE
The band is the partnership of Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry, composer-songwriters whose sound spans continents and centuries to bring forth moody music that echoes cultural influences from Ireland to the Middle East, from the 12th century to the present day.
In 1996, after a decade of cult-artist status, DCD had a No. 1 hit on Billboard's world music chart with the album "Spiritchaser." Gerrard and Perry completed a world tour to ecstatic notices from fans and critics, then went on an extended hiatus that many feared was the end of the road.
If we can overcome the things that separate us and offer the music as an olive branch, perhaps we can create some positive energy and open the pathway of the heart to a deeper understanding of the spirit.

The Grateful Dead, of course, ended with the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995.
That's because he said The Dead has been reminding him lately of how it felt to be in the Grateful Dead when that group was at a creative peak in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
During that period, Hart noted, the Grateful Dead was still defining itself musically, and shows were marked by segments of bold improvisation that brought the musicians and their concert audiences a sense of adventure, discovery and exhilaration that was rare for rock bands to achieve.

By A Passage in Time, Dead Can Dance's increasing awareness of European classicism and ancient musics (predominately Celtic and Middle Eastern) had blossomed into archaic mastery, married to an intriguing lyrical bent for myth and symbolism.
The wailing Middle Eastern sway prevalent on latter-day Dead Can Dance material rarely comes to the fore ("Swans" is an exception); without her more visceral partner's input, Gerrard's debut is almost too ethereal.
