Over time they have moved from medieval and dark (within the realm, serpent's egg, spleen and ideal, dead can dance) to more renaissance (aion), then most lately world music and folk (into the labyrinth, toward the within, spiritchaser, though these albums are mixed with the other genres).
I guess I'm trendy...I don't care much for Lisa Gerrard's vocals on this album; with the exception of "The Wind That Shakes The Barley", her vocals are a little too ethnic for me (and to think I own two Ofra Haza CDs!) I much prefer her on, say, Within the Realm of a Dying Sun.
An excellent new addition to the Dead Can Dance catalogue, but definitely not their best effort (I'm still partial to Spleen and Ideal and Within the Realm of a Dying Sun).

Although in the richness of the musical tapestries she now weaves, Gerrard has moved far beyond the Gothic visions and sensibility of the early Dead Can Dance recordings, there is still something dark, dense and slightly imposing about the music on this album.

By A Passage in Time, Dead Can Dance's increasing awareness of European classicism and ancient musics (predominately Celtic and Middle Eastern) had blossomed into archaic mastery, married to an intriguing lyrical bent for myth and symbolism.
Additionally, the album includes the newly recorded "Bird" and "Spirit." Many of these masterfully arranged songs whirl headlong into the Renaissance, to a sonic realm where somber Gregorian chants ("The Song of the Sibyl," "Song of Sophia") and jaunty maypole dances ("Saltarello") have never left the hit parade.
The wailing Middle Eastern sway prevalent on latter-day Dead Can Dance material rarely comes to the fore ("Swans" is an exception); without her more visceral partner's input, Gerrard's debut is almost too ethereal.
