By the way, the Gooseneck of the Colorado River visible from Dead Horse Point State Park should not be confused with the Gooseneck Overlook in Capitol Reef National Park, or with Goosenecks State Park.
The Gooseneck visible from Dead Horse Point State Park is also visible from the Gooseneck Overlook close to the Island In The Sky section of Canyonlands National Park, but that overlook lies at the end of a lengthy unpaved road suitable only for fourwheel drive vehicles.

It was the first time visiting the park for both of them and they were “stunned” by the scenery and had no idea that there was such a view point in the Moab area.
When standing on Dead Horse Point looking south over the vast Colorado River Basin, maybe the most prominent landmark one sees is the “gooseneck” of the Colorado River where the river meanders and takes a 360 degree bend while flowing south-west.
The ghost horse is actually part of the White Rim formation and has magically eroded away to unmistakably resemble a white horse laying on it’s side.

Dead Horse Point State Park is a small park with an absolutely outstanding view out over the Colorado River canyon and into Canyonlands National Park.
The name of the park comes from the legend that cowboys once chased wild horses onto the peninsula and fenced off the narrow 30 yard neck to create a large corral.
Horses left in the corral when the cowboys left were unable to find their way out and died en masse, leaving just their bleached bones as a reminder.
