Dead Letter Office (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dead Letter Office is a rarities and B-sides collection by R.E.M. and released in 1987 as their fifth official album.
The album effectively mops up many of the additional recordings R.E.M. made pre-Murmur to Lifes Rich Pageant that were outtakes or released as flip sides to their singles internationally.
The album was initially issued as a 15-song collection on vinyl and cassette, but when its CD edition appeared (now the only available edition of Dead Letter Office), the legendary and obscure Chronic Town EP from 1982 was slotted in.

 REM Album Reviews
The album has a perfectly understated air of mystery about it, and though not every song here is substantial (“9-9” and “West of The Fields” being the weakest links), these slightly psychedelic folk rock songs have an offbeat overall feel that’s unlike anything else in the rock spectrum.
Dead Letter Office (I.R.S. ’87) Rating: B- Compiled by Peter Buck and aptly titled “a virtuous compost, Being a Compendium of Oddities Collared, and B-sides Compiled,” Dead Letter Office is a "for the fans" momento that you should purchase only after buying all their other I.R.S. albums.
The album is basically comprised of a handful of brilliant pop songs surrounded by effective-if-hard-to-remember-at-first mood pieces, and it’s also notable for a couple of Mike Mills lead vocals and high profile guest appearances from KRS-One and the B52's Kate Pierson.

The remaining 15 tracks are purely for completists and re-confirm the fact that R.E.M. are definitely an album band, and they truly put the best songs on their albums.
Highlights include surprisingly faithful renditions of The Velvet Underground ("There She Goes Again" and "Femme Fatale") and a third that takes liberties ("Pale Blue Eyes"), as well as the band-written surf tune "White Tornado." Still, it's the quintet of tracks from "Chronic Town" that are a must-have, and the basis for this disc's five-star rating.
I was planning on giving this album 3 stars until I noticed that this release includes R.E.M.'s 1982 EP Chronic Town.

The other full-fledged new R.E.M. song on the album (1992's "Man on the Moon" is included for obvious reasons) is "This Friendly World," a trio of sorts featuring Michael Stipe, Andy Kaufman (Jim Carrey), and Tony Clifton (Jim Carrey).
Thus, the remainder of the album - Tony Clifton murdering "I Will Survive" and either Carrey or Kaufman crooning "One More Song For You" and "Rose Marie", not to mention the theme from "Taxi" - did absolutely nothing for me. For an older listener, these cuts might invoke some nostalgia, although I doubt it.
As for the dialogue snippets that separate each song on the album, they are entirely forgettable and completely unnecessary.

This may be the one that brought the teenyboppers and the baby boomers onto the R.E.M. bandwagon, but that's not reason not to like "Man on the Moon" and "Ignoreland." Besides, it's great background music for Sunday brunch.
Unfortunately, it's the first R.E.M. album that, a few good songs notwithstanding, is also truly boring -- a trend amplified on everything that came later.

In 1992, the British division of IRS reissued all of R.E.M. 's albums with bonus tracks that were culled from flexi-discs, fan-club singles, compilation contributions, B-sides, live tracks, and outtakes.
Since Dead Letter Office itself was a B-sides collection and already contained Chronic Town as a bonus EP, there wasn't much room for bonus tracks on this disc.
Nevertheless, two previously unreleased cuts were featured as bonus cuts: an acoustic version of "Gardening at Night" and "All the Right Friends," an outtake from the Reckoning sessions.

No wonder why this album received instant cult recognition in America, as it demonstrated that rock and pop's influences for a promising debut album can be sufficiently simple enough for mass appeal whilst being as hermetic as a strong personality.
The album, unfortunately, ends on a sour note with "little america", which has a pretty good riff but the rest of the song just sounds half-baked and the chorus is a wretched, unmelodic mess.
The album shows full use of their talents, going from acoustic instruments, to rock guitars, to strings, not to mention Michael's voice at his best, and then there are the lyrics.
