Monty Python's dead parrot did exist - Telegraph
It is the first time that it has been established that parrots lived so far north, although at 55 million years old the bird is very much an 'ex-parrot’, having lived 10 million years after the dinosaurs died out.
The fossil is also much older than the remains of the next-oldest parrot found in the southern hemisphere, which are believed to date back 15 million years.
Dr Waterhouse, who was studying for a PhD in parrot evolution, was able to establish that the fossilised 6cm long humerus, or upper wing, had all the hallmarks of the parrot family.

Late last week UK officials reported that a parrot imported from Suriname had died in quarantine of suspected bird flu, which was later confirmed to be a case of the potent H5N1 strain of bird flu.
After the Surinamese parrot case was revealed, the Council of Agriculture made a comprehensive inspection of the breeder's facilities and found absolutely no evidence of a bird flu outbreak.
They further report that the dead parrot which started the scare may not have been infected after all, but that the samples from that bird may have been mixed up.

The parrot, which died on 16 October, was part of a consignment of 148 birds imported from Surinam that had been housed in a quarantine unit along with 216 exotic birds from Taiwan, where the virus has been found.
Defra said the parrot's death did not affect Britain's status as being free of avian flu, because it occurred in quarantine.
The Surinam consignment a mixture of parrots and "soft bills" arrived in Britain on 16 September and the diagnosis of avian flu was made a month later on 16 October just before it was due to leave the month-long quarantine, Dr Reynolds added.

The tale of the dead parrot
Tissue material from both dead birds was pooled together and tested for the avian flu virus using a highly sensitive method, PCR, which is capable of detecting just one molecule of the virus.
The initial results, released on Friday was that one or both of the dead birds were infected with the H5 strain of avian flu.
This possibly suggests that the parrot from Surinam was free of the virus when it arrived at Heathrow and became infected while it was in quarantine with the birds from Taiwan, which has reported avian flu in domestic poultry.

 BBC - h2g2 - Monty Python's 'Dead Parrot Sketch'
The 'Dead Parrot Sketch' is probably the most well-known, and well-quoted, of any Monty Python sketch.
The 'Dead Parrot sketch' cropped up in several places after its original performance, firstly on the BBC Monty Python's Flying Circus album, and then in the film And Now For Something Completely Different, in which the ending was changed to have the pet-shop owner reveal that what he really wanted to be was a lumberjack...
Of course, you could argue that the 'Dead Parrot sketch' is successful simply because it was written by two of the finest comedy writers and performed by two of the finest comedy actors ever to grace a television screen.
