DVD Verdict Review - Dead Reckoning
Dead Reckoning was made over 46 years ago and good negatives must be hard to come across, but that doesn't mean that the print they utilized for the transfer had to show every bit of its age.
Movies can be categorized by their place in time.
Dead Reckoning is too indebted to the stylish, suspenseful films that came before it, and since its release, many more films have done a better, more artistic job of reinterpreting the overall noir concept into something a little more suave and sinister.

 The Lizabeth Scott Homepage
(In Dead Reckoning (1947) Humphrey Bogart would refer to her as "Cinderella with a husky voice.") The movie was a moderate success, though certainly not in the upper tier of Wallis productions, and Scott shines with a combination of beauty, sensitivity, and vulnerability that would suit her well in films to come.
In 1947 Scott was paired with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas in I Walk Alone (dir: Byron Haskin), a noirish story of betrayal and vengeance.
In Dead Reckoning the tables are turned, as she lures Bogart into a web of lies, deceit, and ultimately death.

Trivia: The role of Coral Chandler was originally intended for Rita Hayworth, but she had already been cast by her estranged husband, Orson Welles for the role of Elsa in The Lady from Shanghai (1947).
Even when things get ugly, this movie is always gorgeous to look at, thanks to the stunning use of shadows and light in Leo Tover's fl-and-white photography.
If you love Bogart and you like your film noir grim yet glamorous and over-the-top at times, DEAD RECKONING is well worth a rental; it's also making the rounds on cable on various Cinemax channels as of this writing.

The movie opens as Captain Warren “Rip” Murdock (Bogart), injured and on the run from police, stumbles into a church where he finds an Army chaplain and starts confessing a story about love and betrayal.
He decides to tell Coral he thinks Johnny is dead, but the only way he can gauge her true reaction is to place his fingers on her spine while they’re dancing (it’s a guy thing, so don’t ask).
Dead Reckoning is a mirror reflection of great film noir.

Much of the research for the movie was done at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, Ore. Miramax Film Corp. paid a fee for the use of the museum's materials.
Since the movie focuses on Hughes' aviation exploits from the late 1920s through the one and only flight of the Hercules in 1947, movie crews made several visits to the museum.

Dead Reckoning isn't a very original movie; but that's okay because it steals from the best.
I'm not sure what the problem was, but the producers of Dead Reckoning should have insisted on the genuine article.
Bottom Line: While it's not as good as the movie's it borrows from, Dead Reckoning is better than most.

The movie is grade B noir, made watchable by a strong Bogart performance and a story line that almost compensates for noticeable weaknesses.
The drawbacks to the movie are due in part to Scott's performance.
We don't know which way she's going in the movie, good girl or bad, until the end, but she just doesn't create the kind of anticipatory tension that some other actresses could create with Bogart.

It was only a matter of time until some enterprising movie buff got the idea to market a line of DVDs devoted to the film noir genre, one that until recently has been only sporadically represented by occasional releases from MGM (He Walked By Night, 1948), VCI (Blonde Ice, 1948) and others.
As played by Lizabeth Scott, Jane Palmer is an unhappily married woman who wants "to move out of the ranks of the middle-class poor" but is thwarted in her ambitions by her husband Alan (Arthur Kennedy), a war veteran who is fairly content with his status quo existence.
Let's face it, she was never a great actress but she fit the part of the smoky-voiced, two-timing blonde vamp to a tee and played it effortlessly again and again in Dead Reckoning (1947), Pitfall (1948) and others.

CAPSULE REVIEW –– If you're a lover of Bogart then you'll probably enjoy this movie well enough.
Here he plays his typical role of a guy from the wrong side of the tracks, who falls for the wrong dame – this time the deeply-voiced Lizabeth Scott –; and finds himself in between a rock and a hard place...or in this instance the cops and a crooked casino owner.
