Canadian films tend to be concerned with an authentic depiction of the 'Canadian reality' as it relates to the physical/cultural world.
Canada is feminine in that she is defined in relation to the aggressive masculine (United States, Britain), her nature is ultimately passive, and she is representative of the other (in being a multi-cultural melting pot).
I have shown that within the two protagonists of the film are elements of the fragmented identity (as related to Canada's duality and the language debate), colonial victimization, gender anxieties, and anxieties around the scientific unknown.

Dead Sea - Hutchinson encyclopedia article about Dead Sea
The Dead Sea-Jordan Valley Rift is a northward extension of the Great Rift Valley which separates the African and Arabian tectonic plates of the Earth's crust.
A 270-km/168-mi canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea was proposed, to pump water north in order to irrigate the rift valley, restore the level of the Dead Sea, and generate power to drive a desalination plant at Sodom on the southwest shore of the sea.
The red eastern sky, the northward flness, the salt Dead Sea, the stony beach crawling with these foul, slow-stirring monsters, the uniform poisonous-looking green of the lichenous plants, the thin air that hurts one's lungs: all contributed to an appalling effect.

In trying to cure Beverly, Elliot himself becomes hooked and from then on the film charts their decline into infantilism and madness.
Gradually their character traits merge and it becomes increasingly difficult to tell them apart - they have become one flesh - vividly exemplified in Claire's horrific dream sequence, Cronenberg's only concession to the gore element of his previous films.
Dead Ringers confirms his successful transition into the commercial mainstream with a film whose surface normality disguises a psychological profundity and disturbing content far exceeding that of his earlier work.

The film was psychologically intense rather than action-oriented, with well delineated characterizations and remarkable imagery that caught the attention of many critics.
Accompanying the films was an exhibition of 300 artifacts, props, stills and posters and special effects puppets including 16 mugwumps and the sex blob from Naked Lunch.
Dead Ringers won accolades from the L.A. Film Critics for Best Director and Cronenberg was invested with Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters, bestowed by France in 1990 and upgraded in 1997 to Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Watching the film, it's almost impossible to tell that the two characters were played by one man. Irons deserved an Oscar for this performance, but he didn't get one until playing Claus von Bulow in "Reversal of Fortune" two years later.
Propelled by the critical and box-office success of "The Fly," this was exactly the kind of film only Cronenberg could make—and he was finally given the budget and total creative freedom to pull off his vision.
His later films would all fall out of the splatter genre completely, attempting to appeal solely to the arthouse crowd, and would never match the excellence of "Dead Ringers," arguably one of the greatest horror films ever made.

Ambivalence is pervasive in Beverly's responses throughout the rest of the film, and I believe that it is this ambivalence that gives rise to his psychotic assaults on his patients, as well as to his eventual murder of Elliot.
Dead Ringers is a profoundly pessimistic work, which mocks all efforts of the human will to wrest control of its future from deterministic forces.

Dead Ringers is the story of two identical twin gynaecologists and their problems with themselves, each other and the women they meet in the course of their work - and it's not a light romantic comedy.
One is a gregarious, outgoing womaniser, the other a shy, bookish recluse, but, as the film makes clear, they're two sides of a very similar coin.

In this way Dead Ringers becomes a fascinating and stylistically clinical study of duality, and Cronenberg doesn't shy away from the dark and unpleasant aspects of the story.

At first sight, the film adaptation of a successful Broadway play is hardly the kind of material to attract that master of the perverse, David Cronenberg.
Cronenberg has long shown his ability to work outside of pure genre (Dead Ringers, for one), and with little effort it is easy to see why this tale of identity and transformation should so appeal to his idiosyncratic talents.
When the film is given over to the two of them alone (and with the requisite suspension of disbelief) it takes on an undeniable power - particularly in a compelling, extended, almost stagy sequence toward the end, where having revealed himself as both man and spy, Lone bares himself (literally and metaphorically) to Irons.

Often referred to as a horror film, Dead Ringers is, in fact, an intense psychological drama that bears little resemblance to any kind of genre horror at all (though the emphasis on the word “dead” on the front cover of the DVD, along with the odd cover art, might suggest otherwise).
Dead Ringers has never looked especially good on home video until recently, when Cronenberg and cinematographer Peter Suschitzky supervised a new transfer of the film for its tenth anniversary in 1998.
The entire 111 minute film, though, is crammed onto a single-layered disc, and this does present a challenge for the authoring team at Madman; who’ve responded by massively varying the encoding bitrate depending on content - it ranges from 3Mb/sec to over 8Mb/sec, and the average is high overall.

David Cronenberg: A Bibliography of Materials in the UC Berkeley Libraries
The film presents viewers with a technologically intense, fast-paced urban environment in which a television-commercial director, who has experienced a head-on collision, is drawn into a group of people, who are sexually obsessed with car crashes and their visible effects on the body.
The film's main characters spend their time practicing sodomy with each other and anyone else they meet, and, on meeting a psychopath who stages car wrecks and is sexually aroused by the sight of bloodied corpses and scarred flesh, they become even more depraved.
He explains that the film is a "political melodrama" set in postrevolutionary China, telling the story of a French junior diplomat driven to spying during an 18-year-long affair with a Chinese transvestite whom he never realizes is actually a man, the emphasis being on the blatant banality of the Western sexual/colonial fantasy.

There's no denying that Death of a President is one provocative movie -- but, skillfully made though it is, the film's provocations amount more to cheap tabloid thrills than to any genuine engagement of hearts and minds.
Range blends his historical "re-creation" with a series of staged talking heads who walk us through the events of that fateful day, and the film's first half carries a lurid but undeniable kick as we watch the President on his way to meet his inexorable end.
Death of a President isn't bad during its first half as it details the assassination and events leading up to it, but the film completely falls apart during a last act depicting the aftermath of Bush's murder.
