Dead air - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dead air is a phenomenon whereby a broadcast which normally carries audio or video unintentionally becomes silent or blank (also known as unmodulated carrier).
Dead air is where a carrier signal is being transmitted, but there is no modulation of that signal.
Dead air can also apply to television broadcasting, generally when a television channel has an interruption to its output, resulting in a blank screen or in the case of digital television, a frozen image, until output is restored or an apology message is broadcast.

 The Idiom: Dead Air
Only the delusional management and "talent" at Air America could have convinced themselves that the world was waiting for a leftist national radio network and that such a network could be a commercial success.
Air America, after nearly imploding before it ever went on the air, has managed in a little over two years to lose over 40 million dollars.
So Air America's spin on the bankruptcy essentially translates to "our format is successful because a few hundred folks in Berkeley and New York love it, though they can't understand why we haven't advocated for the violent overthrow of the goverment more.

Dead Air by Iain Banks - an infinity plus review
Iain Banks's new novel is Dead Air, a first-person narrative from the point of view of Ken Nott, an incendiary radio announcer who runs afoul of several people for various reasons.
While I admit to agreeing with all of Banks's political statements in Dead Air--and also to believing that such views deserve more exposure in the face of the monolithic worldview propounded by the corporate news media--I think that it is regrettable that he couldn't find a way to better integrate the politics within his story.
Unlike Dead Air, though, the politics fuelled the story and provided the substance around which Banks concocted a truly clever and ingenious yarn.

Review: Dead Air by Iain Banks | By genre | Guardian Unlimited Books
His self-imposed authorly rupture, whereby the mainstream quasi-literary novels are published under his normal name, while the science fiction is by "Iain M Banks", has had the effect that, in recent years, the mainstream novels have been mostly stripped of the fantastical elements they used to display and become naturalistic romps.
Dead Air is narrated by Kenneth Nott, a shock-jock on commercial radio who takes a swollen pride in his contrarian opinions.
Dead Air has the feel of a story hastily cobbled together from a year of headlines, an air of dutiful contemporaneity - references to ice skating in Somerset House, and "crap like Big Brother" - that will date very quickly.

Air America's failure derives directly from a lethal mix of really bad programming, wild spending, and a bass-ackwards top-down marketing strategy in which instead of trying to build audiences with excellent programming the network tried to buy into big markets.
Air America in its inception years ago shot itself in the foot out of the gate by going for “big name” celebs to handle the mikes instead of actual talent.
Air America was important in helping to establish an alternative to the right wing hate merchants.
