I know that in that specific situation, the replays clearly showed that the ball was never touched by the punting team, which is why the refs ruled the fumble, but even if they had touched it, I don't think that OK would have had a "free play".
For example, when the ball is about to go into the endzone you will see a player jump into the endzone and hit back out of the end zone and then another player has to fall on it or grab it for it to be down.
In the case of the former two, the ball is clearly immediately dead, but in the case of "touching" it seems that the ball becoming "dead" might possibly occur later.
