 CNN.com - Bush unveils 'Healthy Forests' plan - August 22, 2002
Forestry officials said they believe the main culprit is a long-standing policy that called for protecting the forests at all costs -- no logging, and no fires to burn off dry brush and create natural burn lines that might stop the spread of wildfires.
The result, officials said, is over-populated forests with mounds of wildfire fuel -- underbrush and small trees -- on forest floors.
At the Biscuit fire complex in southern Oregon, Bush got a first-hand look at a fire that's burned since July 13, when a lightning strike touched off dry timber.

In the dead-tree edition of the Gazette this morning, I have a few more things to say about my trip to Spain.
This was about the same time as when Chevy Chase was telling the world “Generalissimo Francisco Franco is STILL dead” and Spaniards were still trying to figure out how a constitutional monarchy could work after living under a fascist dictatorship for 40 years.
In some ways I was reminded of a similar situation after the fall of the Soviet Union and many Russians fed every vice and avarice imaginable.

The dead tree edition of the Wall Street Journal had an editorial that addresses the escalading steroid mess.
Their take on it was that it should be treated the same way records are treated when measuring stats generated in the early, pre-1920s days of baseball, known as the "dead ball" era, in comparison to the "live ball" era that followed.
They propose that all post-1995 numbers be called the "Live Player" era, since that was the year two bit hacks suddenly started beating balls at a clip never known before.
