Topic: Deadband

Patent 4136508: Closed-loop combine header height control
Known header height controls have a "deadband" within which the control is disabled when header height is between the raise and lower deadband limits at which the height sensors actuate the electrohydraulic power means to respectively raise and lower the header, and some controls also have means to vary the width of such deadband.
5 is a diagrammatic illustration of deadband in the disclosed embodiment of the invention.
Deadband adjusting potentiometer DB, which is accessible at the operator's platform, permits variation of gain of summing amplifier SA and thus establishes the "rate" at which error voltage C varies for a unit height error, i.e., a unit deviation of measured header height from height setpoint.

Deadband - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deadband is an area of a signal range or band where no action occurs (the system is dead).
Deadband is used in voltage regulators, thermostats, and alarms.
In some substations there are regulators that keep the voltage within certain predetermined limits, but there is a range of voltage in-between during which no changes are made, such as, maybe, between 112 to 118 volts (deadband is 6 volts here), or 215 to 225 volts (deadband is 10 volts here).

Within the deadband, audio should be present in BOTH earpieces, at full strength.
At one end of the adjustment range for the DEADBAND trimpot, the deadband should have zero, or nearly zero width.
The deadband adjust trimpot can be set for any convenient level, usually around 30 to 50 degrees of headset rotation, to exceed the deadband.

Patent 4509110: Method and apparatus for detecting failures in a control system
Error signals exceeding a predetermined minimum value or deadband are integrated; but the integral is reset to zero whenever the error signal value falls within a predetermined range indicative of normal steady state operating tolerances.
The deadband allows the integrator to ignore errors up to a value which is considered likely to be the result of normal behavior rather than a fault in the system.
This is advantageous since small error levels outside of the deadband are less likely to be the result of a fault or impending failure in the control system 12 than are large error levels and can, in any event, be tolerated for longer periods of time.

Deadband in switches?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Deadband is also known as hysteresis and is the amount of a measured variable (pressure, temperature, etc.) between the point where a switch closes and then re-opens.
Often the deadband of a switch is fixed and cannot be adjusted.
Selection of deadband depends on the process under control, it may be fixed or adjustable.

The nonlinear input/output relationship is simply modeled as a torque deadband with a linear input/output relationship outside of the deadband and a linearly variable viscous damping term.
The value of J can then be found using by solving Equation 1 for J. The torque deadband for each running surface is measured by placing the wheel on the running surface, applying an increasing voltage to the motor input, and measuring the value of the input voltage when steering motor motion is just detected.
The torque deadband had the predicted effect of leaving a non-zero command voltage on the motor input due to the small steady state angular error and the high system gain.

DEADBAND sensitivity to audio level changes was fairly smooth, and proved to be a useful way to "adjust" the DEADBAND width, during the test....
once the initial adjustment of the DEADBAND trimpot was completed, it was found that audio level changes of 15 to 20 db would change the DEADBAND size from 360 degrees to zero, in a fairly smooth and useful manner.
This might have been due to a DEADBAND zone that was adjusted to be excessively narrow, but there was a lot of activity going on at the moment, and I did not investigate it closely.

Control system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most real feedback loops are concerned about wearing out control machinery like valves, by adjusting them many times per second.
Therefore, they often have a "deadband," a region around the current value in which no control action occurs.
Another common method is to filter the feedback loop.

Where a digital servo differs, is in the way it processes the incoming receiver information, and in turn controls the initial power to the servomotor, reducing the deadband, increasing the resolution and generating tremendous holding power.
This also means that not only does the servomotor respond faster to the commands, but that increases or decreases in power for acceleration/deceleration are able to be transmitted to the servomotor far more frequently.

"Deadband" is the degree to which the servo’s shaft must be deflected from its current position before the servo responds to correct it.
And because the servo position is updated so frequently (300 times a second is typical; 50 or 60 times a second in an analog servo), a digital servo can hold its position more forcefully, which is the holding power.

One of the on-going activities is the analysis to determine the cause of the multiple firings that are occasionally seen when the spacecraft's attitude reaches the edge of the deadband, or the edge of the region through which the spacecraft can drift without correcting itself.
A typical deadband used for communicating with the spacecraft is 4 degrees in the X, Y and Z-axes and the spacecraft commonly moves through the deadband at a rate of less than 0.02 degrees/second.
When the spacecraft's attitude hits the edge of the deadband, commands are automatically issued to the thrusters to move the spacecraft toward the other side of the deadband.
