In the life of most annuals, the "goal" is one of setting seed, so there's little impetus for the plant to keep flowering if seeds are being formed.
If you remove the faded flowers on plants like marigolds, pansies, calendula and zinnias however, the plant is "tricked" into continuing to put all its energy into continuing to flower.
For busy gardeners, having a few flowers that self-clean can mean having a little extra time to simply enjoy a part of the garden without feeling compelled to work in it.

 World Wide Words: Deadhead
You might think that the theatrical term had come from the idea of a dead flower head, or the action of deadheading one.
Similarly, the term was applied to a dull or lazy person, one who contributes nothing to an enterprise, only in the early years of the twentieth century, well after the theatrical and transport senses had become well established.
Deadhead, for a loyal fan of the long-running musical group The Grateful Dead, derives from one in particular of a set of sixties words in -head, pothead, but with self-mocking undertones of this last usage; it would be nice to think there was a conscious link between it and the original theatrical sense.

The earliest meanings of the word "deadhead" predate the Grateful Dead by four centuries, but have intriguing resonances for its later use.
The original Latin term, _caput mortuum,_ was used by alchemists to describe the residue "remaining after the distillation or sublimation of any substance, 'good for nothing but to be flung away, all vertue being extracted'"--i.e., used up.
Deadheads have enlarged on Kesey's declaration, so that the words mean more than being on a particular bus, and more than being a Deadhead.
