I "lived" in Deadhorse from 1980 til 1987, working a minimum of 12 weeks at a time, with a couple 16ers thrown in so I could time an R and R with something I wanted to do.

Most land between Deadhorse and the Arctic Ocean (Beaufort Sea) is leased by BP which runs the Prudhoe Bay oil field, the largest oil field in the United States.
Deadhorse has an all weather airport with daily flights from Anchorage and Fairbanks on Alaska Airlines and is also serviced by several private charter carriers.
Deadhorse Alaska was opened to the public in 1981, since then in Deadhorse and Prudhoe Bay it has experienced a rapid growth in tourism to see the oil pipeline and for some to join the Polar bear club which requires to swim, or fully dip oneself into the artic ocean.

From Deadhorse to Barrow you can either go on the airways (V438, which is the same as direct: 178 nm) or you can stay slightly south of the airway to go along the coast (which is a bit longer, depending how you go).
The road network around Prudhoe Bay extends some miles to the west, but all roads past Deadhorse are closed to the public.

Another story in recent circulation cites a cheechako who somehow wandered into the Beaufort Sea area, found a caribou skull, and mistakenly proclaimed that this sign would be used to name this area Deadhorse.
Because I have found out the truth, the real origin of the name “Deadhorse” told to me by not one, but three different old-timers who have worked on the Slope since cat train days.
   One story says the “Deadhorse Haulers” got its name because, at that time, the trucking company had the contract to haul away dead horses in the Fairbanks area.

I met 2 cyclist that had all their camping gear (like me) on their bikes and were both headed for Deadhorse.
I told the man that I had biked from Deadhorse and he said, " I though you looked familiar" and then he told me that he was man that gave me 2 bananas near Coldfoot.

 ADVrider - Dalton Hwy to Deadhorse
Me and a buddy were at Deadhorse on Aug. 4th, starting a UCC.
The one thing I'll ad, since we left Fairbanks at 3 PM; as an alternative to staying at Coldfoot, we stayed at a hunting camp in Wiseman, which is 11 miles north of Coldfoot, and about 2 miles west from the Dalton Hwy.
There were snow capped peaks all the way in to Deadhorse.

After a great lunch at the fourteen dollar lunch buffet at the Prudhoe Bay Hotel the tour group bid a farewell to our tourguide Dave, and we boarded a Frontier airways plane and flew back south to Fairbanks.
Back in Fairbanks I did as I was told to by Chuck, who I’ve met in Coldfoot on that first night above the Arctic Circle, and went to ‘Ivory Jacks’, a true roadhouse in the Alaskan roadhouse tradition at the north side of the city.

He was taking the stupid shuttle in the morning, so I have to wait till 11am to get out of here.
There are 2 more people coming from Deadhorse too, and they didn't do the tour, so we'll see how happy they are, that they are stuck here till 11am.
