Deadlands is a genre-mixing alternate history roleplaying game which combines the Western and horror genres.
The basic rules provide for characters and settings that could be expected to appear in the "Wild West" genre of movies and pulp fiction, and most of the in-game action is presumed to occur in the wild frontiers of the American West, or in barely-tamed frontier towns like Tombstone, Arizona or Dodge City, Kansas.
Deadlands uses a system of die roll resolution that is somewhat similar to Shadowrun and The Storyteller System.

When we first heard about Deadlands, we were so inspired by the wonderful Weird West and the vast quantities of top-quality source material, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that it would make a fantastic game.
At least 75 percent of Cthulhu is based on this, and we expect a similar quantity of Deadlands work to come from the CTG.

Anyway, If you check out http://www.peginc.com/ makers of Deadlands and Weird Wars, youll see that Shane Helmsley maker of DL is doing Deadlands Reloaded, basically an compilation of sorts of the mounds of books and an update of the timeline.
I probably would have liked it better if it weren't related to Deadlands, as like I said, I found it depressing that basically despite the actions of the heros/PCs, the world was doomed.
Deadlands does have a number of elements - magic and wierd science, and horror and the Wild West - but that's really not so much more than a great many games.

I own Deadlands D20, and my roommate has a copy of 1st Ed Deadlands that I could borrow, but I'm debating which to use.
Deadlands Classic is, in my opinion, a much better system than d20.
Also, most of my problems with d20 Deadlands could be solved simply by using the Wounds/Vitality system, though the magic systems need a complete overhaul as well.
