And he's hoping a new TV series will help the state reach that goal.
HBO's series Deadwood depicts the South Dakota gaming town as a western gun slinging, whiskey drinking, foul mouth community.

With the advent of so many older TV series being brought out on TV, I confess, I have been waiting for this one.

 Blogcritics.org: Review: Rome - HBO's Toga Party!
If their western Deadwood is just too dirty and profane for some people and the depression-era mysticism of Carnivale left others scratching their heads, Rome may surprise viewers with how compelling it can be and how relevant it can feel.
If auhenticity was the goal of this lavishly promoted series, it suffices to take a look at the first front view of a pussy to see HBO has done a sloppy research, or failed miserably to properly vet its nudes.
People keep wanting to compare Rome to I, Claudius, the BBC mini-series that aired in the States back in 1977, saying that production was the best program ever set in ancient Rome.

TV Review: 'Rome' conquers 'Prison Break'
An open-heart surgery scene in episode two is not quite as bad as watching Al Swearengen pass kidney stones on "Deadwood," but it is unpleasant.
The series also includes the requisite soap opera plot about Lincoln's son, who hates his stepfather and gets caught by the cops with two pounds of marijuana.
It takes at least two episodes before "Rome" evolves into a cohesive story with appealingly flawed characters, particularly Lucius, who is initially jealous and cold toward his wife, Niobe (Indira Varma), when he returns to Rome after eight years away.

But that plan has been scrapped, and now the network is scheduling the 1999 pilot episode of “West Wing” for 6 p.m., followed by the finale for the seven-season drama at 7 p.m.
And news has seeped out that the cast of “The West Wing” declined to appear in a retrospective of the series because NBC and Warner Bros. failed to cough up enough money to make their memory-sharing worthwhile.
