Chrono-Biographical Sketch: Dean Amadon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Amadon was a leading ornithologist during the middle years of the twentieth century.
Amadon was a renowned expert on birds of prey, and his Eagles, Hawks and Falcons of the World is no doubt his most important scientific study; another important work, however, was his doctoral program investigation of the evolution of the honeycreepers, a family of birds endemic to the Hawaiian Islands.
Amadon also spent time in the field in the South Pacific, Philippines, Africa, Venezuela, and Australia.

Dean Amadon was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1912.
Graduating from Hobart in 1934, Amadon began graduate work at Cornell University under A. Allen, the first professor of ornithology in the United States.
World War II intervened, but after its abrupt conclusion, while awaiting transportation home, Amadon was able to have published a paper about the birds he encountered in the shrapnel-blasted forests of the Philippines.

An Estimated Weight of the Largest Known Bird
Femur area, the area of the cross section of the femur calcula.ted from its circumference measured at its smallest point near the center of the shaft.
In a previous paper (Amadon, 1943a) I have summarized earlier formula which show that the volume of an egg in cubic centimeters is roughly equal to one-half its length times its breadth squ.ared (0.5 LBs), measurements being to the nearest centimeter.
This calculation also corresponds approximately to the weight of the egg in grams, since the specific gravity of a fresh egg is about I. As interest for present purposes is in relative rather than absolute egg weights, use of this formula is satisfactory.

University of Missouri: Dr. Carrel, Professor of Biological Sciences   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Jim Carrel is a naturalist with a focus on the biology of insects and spiders.
Like Anna B. Comstock, Dean Amadon, and many others, as he grew up in rural upstate New York he combined an interest in the natural world with a desire to do science.
Jim's early interest in fisheries biology gave way in junior high to a passion for biology and chemistry, especially molds and fermentation, which led quite logically to production of distilled spirits.

Curassows and Related Birds Auk, The - Find Articles
Curassows and Related Birds.-Jean Delacour and Dean Amadon, with an updated chapter by Josep del Hoyo and Anna Mods.
In this case, over and above the exceptional quantity of new material to be incorporated, there was the problem of authorship: Jean Delacour was long dead, and Dean Amadon unable to participate actively in the new work.
There is an appropriate recommendation for the separate citation of the update chapter; but another one, inviting the whole book to be considered simply a second edition -"Delacour and Amadon (2004)" -is misleading because, in reality, there is Delacour and Amadon (1973) and del Hoyo and Motis (2004), plus the new Gilbert plates.
