In the Church of England and Roman Catholic Church, a deanery is a collection of parishes within an archdeaconry.
The deanery is presided over by the rural dean.
The deanery synod has a membership of all clergy who are licensed to a parish within the deanery, plus elected lay members from every parish.

Cranbrook Deanery is part of the Diocese of Canterbury and is situated in the Weald of Kent - the Garden of England.
The Deanery Synod comprises members of the clergy of the constituent parishes, and lay members elected at their Annual Parochial Church Meeting to serve for 3 years.
The Deanery Synod normally meets 4 times a year, rotating round the parishes, in February, May, September and November, with additional meetings if there is a need.

The Deanery of North West Essex (map) was formed in November 1998 and incorporates the parishes of Braintree, Dunmow, Great Bardfield, Halstead, Saffron Walden and Stansted.
The Dean's office (currently Fr Tony McKenty parish priest of Braintree) is primarily pastoral, being an extension of the Bishop's pastoral office as shepherd: it is an office of apostolic caring for the Church in the area of promoting and sustaining supra-parochial action as envisaged by the Second Vatican Council.
The Dean, by virtue of his election (a three year term resulting from a secret ballot of the clergy of the Deanery) is a member of the Council of Priests and also a member of the Brentwood Diocesan Pastoral Council.
