BY DEARNE FM Applications for a licence to serve the town of Barnsley, in South Yorkshire, and as much of the metropolitan borough as proves technically feasible, were invited on 15 February 2002.
Dearne FM will broadcast a good mix of hits from the past four decades, with tracks from the 60s and 70s accounting for at least 20% of the output.
Dearne FM has conducted three trial broadcasts in the area since 1999, and the principal source of the local support it received was from individual listeners to those short-term services who expressed enjoyment of what they heard.

The Dearne and Dove Canal was to be built from the River Don Navigation near Swinton heading north west into Barnsley.
Although the Dearne and Dove Canal was owned by a completely independent company, it was strongly promoted by the River Don Navigation Company who wanted to increase their profits by accessing mines not currently in easy reach of their waterway.
TODAY The Dearne and Dove Canal, along with its old rival the Barnsley Canal, is now carefully watched over by the Barnsley and Dearne and Dove Trust.

Despite the reservoirs the Dearne and Dove Canal suffered from water shortages.
Water was pumped to the Barnsley Canal in 1804 and the Dearne and Dove was closed itself in the summers of 1805 and 1806 due to drought.
The bulk of trade on the canal was coal and to ensure that the barges travelled via the Don and not northwards on the Barnsley Canal, the Dearne and Dove was leased by the Don Navigation.

A shoe fetishist who raped four women and attempted to attack two others, keeping their stilettos as trophies, was jailed for life yesterday more than 20 years after the assaults.
James Lloyd, 50, who was known as the Dearne Valley shoe rapist, was told by a judge at Sheffield crown court that he must serve at least 15 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
He was finally tracked down following a cold-case review of the attacks four years ago after detectives found a near match of a DNA sample from his sister with evidence gathered at the time of the assaults, in the early 1980s.

With 18 locks, a tunnel, difficult terrain along the sides of the valleys which gave the canal its name - the Dearne and Dove - and two branches, construction was expensive and funds insufficient.
The infant River Dearne was only a short distance away, and could theoretically be tapped for supplies - but not if the Don Navigation, whose main line was fed by the Dearne, had anything to do with it.
Restoring the Barnsley and Dearne and Dove is likely to prove even more of a challenge, but these canals have at last embarked on the long journey back to life.

Now, the Barnsley, Dearne and Dove Canals Trust has been formed and intends to reinstate the two canals (Barnsley and Dearne and Dove), which form the missing link between the Aire and the Calder and the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigations.
At present you there are sections of the Dearne and Dove at Elsecar, by the Elsecar Heritage Centre and Barnsley Canal at Royston which have been restored.

They are gathering information on the wildlife, local history, geology and the moods of the river Dearne, in anticipation of two applications to take coal by opencast mining right on their doorsteps.
You might call them nimbys; they would argue that a century and a half of mining, and its aftermath, entitles them to some respite.
The answer to that may lie in a closer inspection of the river.
