Unlike most personifications of death, Death also visits people as they are born, according to Destruction in the "Sandman Special." Evidently, only she seems to remember these encounters.
Death is the second eldest of the Endless, a family of anthropomorphic beings.
Death's realm is not portrayed in detail in the series, except for a brief scene in her 'house' in the Sandman Special, Song of Orpheus and later in The Books of Magic series.

Sometime prior to 1951, the Sandman was plying his novice scientific acumen with his partner Sandy Hawkins in an attempt to make a weapon using silicon derived from sand.
The Sandman was nearly crushed by the shame of his pride and ignorance in not seeking other help for Sandy, and retired some time later.
Although this stroke forced the Sandman to restrict his activities, he participated to a limited degree in the Crisis on Infinite Earths, and joined the rest of the JSA in Limbo as they fought to forestall Ragnarok (Last Days of the Justice Society #1).

Death tried to cheer him up with a quote from Mary Poppins (yes, I know...), talked about their mission and his role, and after that little speech, she took him on her "tour".
Death, on her side, had found her own audience, so much that she soon had her own mini-series (2 series of 3 issues each, later gathered in two reprints).
The strangest contradiction of all about Death, is that this comics tends to reconcile you with death (well, for those who are allergic to it, because for myself I've always been "half in love with easeful death" myself, as shows my attraction for Amadeo) while making you enjoy life better.

Death enjoys her work and is a happy creature, with an infectious laugh and a keen sense of humour.

Sandman: The Dream Hunters is off to one side, as are the two Death books: the High Cost of Living and the Time of your Life.
There is a Sandman shirt that was made which seems to have a story printed on the background.
I don't think he hides it at all: read Sandman 8, "The Sound of Her Wings", or Sandman 21, the first part of Season of Mists, or part of the Wake.

Death next appeared in SANDMAN #20, in "Facade," the tragic story of a woman trapped by life, by Gaiman and artists Colleen Doran and Malcolm Jones III.
Her next appearances, collected in SANDMAN: SEASON OF MISTS, display her willingness to stand against her brother when he is wrong (#21, by Neil Gaiman and Dringenberg) and an unexpectedly flexible approach to her job when circumstances warrant.
The latter is apparent in SANDMAN #25, as Gaiman and Jones are accompanied by penciller Matt Wagner.

Death can of course be considered the high cost of living.
In Sandman #3, which took place in late 1988 or early 1989, she was 247.
That seems to indicate that the day of the century that Death has to live as a mortal is always the same one, or at least in the same year of the century.

The Sandman: The Kindly Ones (Sandman) by Neil Gaiman
I don't think I'm the only person to have fallen in love with Death, who is certainly Neil Gaiman's most popular and possibly his most original character, and while he himself may not consider this his best work, any story that gives us more of her can only be a good thing.
This means that we get less of Death's profound and amusing soundbites, and have to make do for the most part with the sight of her (very pretty) face, but given the quality of the rest of the writing, this isn't as bad as it might sound.

"Death: at Death's Door" is a cute retelling of this story from Death's point of view, which does not do it justice since it's much shorter, condensed and does not recreate the epic sense of mythology that the Sandman is.
In Season of Mists, Sandman AKA Dream AKA Morpheus, the series' main character and the member of the Endless who controls the realm of dreams, ventures into Hell to free a former lover he condemned there thousands of years ago.

The most benevolent and likeable of his siblings is Death - a perky goth chick, introduced near the end of this volume, who rescues mortals from the miseries inflicted by the other six -- though what becomes of them thereafter is unclear.

Death, of course, is always the height of fashion sense, even when working overtime under difficult conditions.
The storyline picks up when she's riffing on scenes from Seasons of Mists, but when Death is on her own the only thing she can do is act cute, pose for the camera and have a big old party in her domain.
And if they use this as an entrypoint into the Sandman series, they may be disappointed to find that the "canonical" Endless are harder on the eyes than Thompson's manga versions, and the stories, though containing (often macabre) humor, are frequently grim.

And on the Death note: Neil Gaiman says that the Endless' Death is the ultimate incarnation, though an issue of Captain Atom says the Racer is "death as an inevitability", whereas Death is "death as compassionate release."
I think Gaiman's view on Death is that she is definitely not the Black Racer...as in, it's not like the Racer represents one aspect of death while she represents another.

Since her 1st apperance in Sandman VIII, Death has found her way onto coffee mugs, into other comic titles, outnumbers her younger brother with artisitc representations (everyone might not draw Dream, but they all draw Death), and has become a symbolic avatar for the current gothic co-culture.
Analogues to Gaiman's Death, whether they be a person in costume or an ilustration of someone can be noted by two symbols: the eye of Horus and the Egyptian ankh.
In Sandman, Death is unfeared, and is seen as more of a guide to a new realm, than a threat to existence on the old one.
