Death Cab for Cutie was officially formed in Bellingham, Washington, and lyrics from many of the early songs include local references that were important to the band's development.

Death Cab for Cutie is a song composed by Vivian Stanshall and performed by himself and his Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, which was included on their 1967 album Gorilla.
Vivian intended "Death Cab for Cutie" as a send-up of Elvis Presley, and he performed it as such.
The term "Death Cab for Cutie" appears to have been coined by Richard Hoggart in his "The Uses of Literacy," a 1957 book discussing British popular culture -- a pioneering work in the cultural studies field.

I think this is Death Cabs best album, all the songs are brilliant, well produced but still quite a raw feel (like in the photo album).
I hadnt really heard of Death Cab For Cutie ubtil a couple of months ago and thought they were good but was not sure if they were good enough for me to buy an album of theirs.
Every time I tell a friend that they have to buy the new album by Death Cab for Cutie their eyes glaze over and no amount of missionary-zeal at the glorious music of this album can ever win them back.

When an indie-rock band as intimately and fiercely loved as Death Cab for Cutie makes the inevitable major label jump, it often telegraphs a painful death.
That being said, I think this cd is one of, if not the freshest and most original pieces of work I have heard in a long time.
Given the opportunity to expand and see what's out there is risky, but Death Cab pulls it off amazingly well.

The group named themselves Death Cab for Cutie (in reference to a song performed by the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band in the Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour film) and, in 1998, they released their first indie debut LP, Something About Airplanes.
Within the next five years, they went on to release three full length independent albums and an EP, the most highly acclaimed being 2003's Transatlanticism (at which time they were also joined by percussionist Jason McGerr).
