The city of Venice in 1949 is a place for the down-and-out, its pier and amusement park crumbling, its rollercoaster lying on its side "like the bones of a vast dinosaur," old animal cages abandoned in the canals and filled with fish, and the oil pumps looking like "great pterodactyls" as they creak and groan.
Inhabited by "the lonelies," old people with no futures, Venice is a dark and dismal place in those final days before the pier is demolished.

Returning to Venice late one night on the last trolley from Los Angeles, he finds himself alone in the car, except for a mysterious, alcohol-fumed vagrant, who whispers in his ear, "Death is a lonely business." Convinced that he has met "Death's friend," the speaker gets...

At the end of one long canal you could find old circus wagons that had been rolled and dumped, and in the cages, at midnight, if you looked, things lived-fish and crayfish moving with the tide; and it was all the circuses of time somehow gone to doom and rusting away.
And it was in that time, in one of those lonely years when the fogs never ended and the winds never stopped their laments, that riding the old red trolley, the high-bucketing thunder, one night I met up with Death's friend and didn't know it.
"Is a lonely business!" he said, in a dreadful whisper, and moved away. The car was empty.

His death sparked an extraordinary chain of events - an inquiry that lifted the lid on the inner workings of government and almost threatened to topple the prime minister but ended up instead precipitating one of the biggest crises in the BBC's history.
A few days later, on 1 September, Dr Kelly's widow Janice gave an insight into the scientist's state of mind before his death, saying he was "distracted" and "dejected" and had appeared "heartbroken" on the day he disappeared.
His job was to focus on the events that may have led to Dr Kelly's death, rather than the wider issue of Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction.

In this he remains unique: his Venice is like no other part of Los Angeles: a cold, lonely place, populated by elderly freaks, failing businesses, a fading style of life, all crumbling away in a post-industrial wilderness of stagnant canals and dilapidated buildings.
Petty obsessions abound and everyone behaves oddly: the fat lady who won't lie down, the movie star who dresses up as her own chauffeur, the cinema proprietor who celebrates his demise with a season of free films.
The madness instils itself as the book goes on, and the overstatements and overreactions become a part of the whole, not memorably, but in their own way effectively.
