Atomic Rooster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Between Palmer's departure (to be the third part of Emerson, Lake and Palmer), and the recording of a second album, guitarist John Cann (also credited as John Du Cann) joined the Rooster giving a whole new dimension to the music with his distinctive guitar attack.
Death Walks Behind You featured Paul Hammond on drums, and this record yielded the aforementioned "Tomorrow Night".
Now with certain success in the charts, the band was augmented with singer Peter French for their next effort on vinyl, In Hearing Of Atomic Rooster, the third album.

While I was reviewing Atomic Rooster's Death Walks Behind You album, I came across an article mentioning Big Elf and the sound comparison I used in the review of Closer to Doom.
Any band that covers such a classic track as "Death Walks Behind You" is worth a look, and the description of the sound intrigued me enough to buy both discs.
The keyboard playing on this album is stellar and mixes with the crushing guitar riffs that threaten to pound you into dust with their insistent urging.

Death Walks Behind You (Elektra ’70) Rating: B+
Fact is, Death Walks Behind You - generally considered far and away the band's best album - is something of a minor "forgotten" hard rock gem, not nearly in the same league as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, or Led Zeppelin but definitely notable contenders thereafter, if only for a brief while.
By the time of Death Walks Behind You, the band's second album, Paul Hammond had replaced Carl Palmer on drums and John DuCann joined the trio as singer/guitarist, while group leader Vincent Crane added his distinctive keyboards and most of the songwriting while conjuring bass sounds from his keyboards as well.

Exhumed - Anatomy Is Destiny - Reviews - Diabolical Conquest Webzine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Exhumed, although certainly better than the vast majority of their peers among death metal bands that have broken out within the past 6-7 years, presents a textbook case of one of the biggest problems that currently plague this genre.
The basic style is still a combination of simple, but effective Stockholm-style death metal riffs played over a thrash backbeat, with frequent blasting and Carcass-esque multi-pitched vocals and tongue-in-cheek gore lyrics.
This is by no means a problem that's unique to Exhumed, since a vast, vast majority of death metal albums being released nowadays suffer from the same lack of variety - and it really goes all the way back to the genre's beginnings.

Paris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Middle Ages, Paris prospered as a trading and intellectual nucleus, interrupted temporarily when the Black Death struck in the 14th century, and again in the 15th century when urban revolts drove the royal court to abandon the city for almost 100 years.
Under the reign of King Louis XIV, the Sun King, from 1643 to 1715, the royal residence was moved from Paris to nearby Versailles.
Prior to 1968, département 75 was the Seine département, which contained the city of Paris and its immediate suburbs.

Devil's Answer might be the record for which Atomic Rooster are remembered, but it was their second album which posted warning that they were on the verge of creating something dazzling -- simply because the record itself is a thing of almost freakish beauty.
With only organist Vincent Crane surviving from the original lineup, and John Du Cann coming in to relieve him of some of the songwriting duties, Death Walks Behind You opens at a gallop and closes with a sprint.
The title track is effectively spooky enough for any Hammer horror aficionado, all descending pianos and Psycho-screaming guitars; while "Gershatzer," a duet for organ and percussion, proves that new drummer Paul Hammond is more than a match for the departed Carl Palmer.

 Atomic Rooster: Paul Green remembers
The archetypal sixties dude thus addressed is "walking down the road/footsteps close behind..." A possible allusion to the Man, the Heat, the Pigs or other ogres of the emergent dope culture; but the song also glances over its shoulder at a much older adversary.
All the elements - the ritualistic chant of the vocals, the menacing gallop of that descending guitar figure, the slow gospel piano bridge - are fused together by a total conviction.
Maybe such pieces could be heard as a response to a social phenomenon, Crane and co seizing on a mood in the counterculture, the seventies downturn from that brief sixties spasm of utopian euphoria.

Opener and title track "Death Walks Behind You" has a haunting spaced out piano intro before breaking into its sledgehammer riff and demonic vocals.
Atomic Rooster was Vince Crane, a very talented musician, one of the best keyboard players in rock, and certainly one of the best composers, sadly underrated, whose life was cut short few years ago, by his suicide due to his illness (manic depression).
Death Walks Behind You is an example of Crane on top form.

Vincent Crane elected to continue the band and with guitarist John Cann and drummer Paul Hammond recorded the second Atomic Rooster album Death Walks Behind You.
The material here is pretty much split between Cann and Crane and the songs are a big improvement on the debut album that was less than a year behind the group at this point.
The legacy he left behind however with Atomic Rooster is a sizeable one and one that is still influencing musicians to this day which is a fitting tribute to the man and his music.
