Venice (Italian: Venezia), the "city of canals", is the capital of the region of Veneto and of the province of Venice, Padua (Padova), in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area, population 1,600,000.
In the 12th century the essentials for the power of Venice were laid: the Venetian Arsenal was under construction in 1104; Venice wrested control of the Brenner pass from Verona in 1178, opening a lifeline to silver from Germany; the last autocratic doge, Vitale Michiele, died in 1172.
It was realised that extraction of the aquifer was the cause.

I suspect that when we survey the musical landscape of the early seventeenth century, it is opera, monody, and madrigal that come most quickly and lastingly into view, and given the contemporaneous attention given to the relationship between music and word, it is unsurprising that this would be the case.
Death in Venice is also a drama of inaction.
Vocally, the opera must be dominated by the tenor singing Aschenbach and by the virtuoso baritone who undertakes the seven roles that figure in Aschenbach's intellectual, moral and physical death.

There Britten composed Paul Bunyan, his first opera (to a libretto by Auden), as well as the first of many song cycles for Pears; the period was otherwise remarkable for a number of orchestral works, including Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge (for string orchestra) and Sinfonia da Requiem (for full orchestra).
Britten was however encountering opposition from sectors of the English musical establishment and gradually withdrew from the London scene, founding the English Opera Group in 1947 and the Aldeburgh Festival the following year, partly (though not solely) to showcase his own works.
They include the opera Death in Venice (1973), the Suite on English Folk Tunes "A Time There Was" and Third String Quartet (1975), which drew on material from Death in Venice, as well as the dramatic cantata Phaedra (1976), written for Janet Baker.

When he was six, he wrote a play, "The Royal Falily" [sic]; it was about the death of Prince John, the fifth son of George V, at the age of 13 in 1919.
Later the opera Peter Grimes would be one of his most important works.
He was also made a life peer in 1976, the year of his death; the Encyclopedia Britannica entry calls him Baron Britten.

This reading may not have the fire of the Rostropovich recording, but it is closer to the symphonic quality of a work that features the cello but almost in an obbligato role.
The real reason to make this particular recording part of your library is the Suite from the opera DEATH IN VENICE, the last major composition by Britten, compiled by Steuart Bedford.
As far as I can figure, the only reason this hasn't become one of the most famous pieces of "classical" music of the last hundred years is because of the (ahem!) controversial subject matter of Thomas Mann's original story which was of course the basis for Britten's opera.
