  The Death of Superman
Superman as hero doesn't fit with the antiheroes of this age.
Yet Superman was different: he was more bold than the others; he found legislative gridlock and bureaucratic police activity a source of derision; he made decisions on the spot.
Superman is after all an anachronism, a model of a bygone era when virtue mattered, when morality wasn't relative, when the distinction between good and evil didn't require an arcane hour-long lecture.

 Fanzing 44 - May 2002 - From the Bookshelf
Oddly, understanding The Death Of Superman fully seems more to depend upon knowledge of JLA continuity than that of the actual protagonist, with the team left largely unexplained and a few of the subplots of that title effecting their actions during the battle.
For example, the overhead shot of Superman blasting Doomsday with his heat vision is memorable, but is completely unrelated to the action on the preceding page (Superman punching Doomsday in the back) and has no visible consequences on the following one (wherein Doomsday hits Superman in the jaw).
Though I feel the logic that has been employed in recent years that Superman's foes should rival him physically is questionable, Doomsday transcended the role of mere villain and was presented as nothing short of a force of nature.

Superman dies in pointless slugfest with the enigmatic Doomsday.
Someone posted a copy of Superman #75, the issue in which he died, this copy allegedly still looking as good as new, for sale on Dec. 25 and though he's only asking $2.76 for it as a starting price, he has not yet received any bids at all.
In other words, Superman was beaten to death by an inarticulate berserker thug who was created out of thin air (as far as fans could tell at the time) just for the express purpose of beating Superman to death in his own special (boringly inarticulate and berserk) way.

 Studies in Popular Culture 23.3
At a crucial juncture in the development of the Superman mythos (and in addition to its interrogation of the nature of, and responses to, heroism), The Death of Superman constructs a thorough and critical analysis of the media, through images of television and newspaper pervading the narrative.
The interview is a self‑referential strategy for the construction of Superman as a public figure, reflecting a reality beyond the text, in which he was likewise rendered a media personality by the massive publicity campaigns of DC Comics for the promotion of The Death of Superman.
The death of hundreds of citizens, the devastation of Metropolis and Superman’s bravery and suffering are important only in terms of their story potential; there is little compassion in the news broadcasts.

Superman uncharacteristically did not fall on any strategy or planning whatsoever, and instead only resolved to put everything into his fists to beat Doomsday out of commission.
Granted Superman put his all into that final punch, but by then Superman was already very tired and greatly injured while the only damage Doomsday incurred was a broken spiky portrusion or two.

Fanzing 21 - October 1999 - The Death of Superman
Yes, Superman DID return shortly after his death (although the combined stories of his death, funeral, and return took, what seemed like, almost a year), but the terrific battle with the monster Doomsday affected the DC Universe in a way that nobody could have realized – or even do realize NOW.
Superman's removal from this realm of reality indirectly brought many severe and subtle changes to the company, resulting in power or identity changes in classic champions, and eventually leading to several crises that were quelled only by the combined effort of all of Earth's greatest heroes.
The Death of Superman caused the Reign, which brought Coast City's destruction, which brought about the controversial villain Parallax and the destruction of the GL Corps, and Parallax brought Zero Hour, which brought the Speed Force into play.

Cultural influences on Superman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Superman is believed to have been inspired in part by Philip Wylie's 1930 science fiction novel Gladiator, about a man whose superhuman strength inspires him to help the human race, but who is instead spurned by humanity precisely because of his power.
Superman's origin also has similarities to that of Jesus Christ: both are sent by their fathers (Jor-El and God respectively) to Earth to help mankind.
Superman's origin has often been compared to the tales of many immigrants who came to North America, often because their lives at home were in jeopardy (mirroring Krypton's danger and destruction).

The Death of Superman storyline was one of the biggest "events" in the history of comics; that it was handled clumsily, with the same thought process that leads to crying monkeys, is something not much brought up.
Surely the death of the biggest character in the DC Universe deserves better than this: a multi-issue, multi-title crossover that pits the Man of Steel against an unknown being of unknown abilities (um, well, he was very strong) whose sole purpose was to smash up whatever got into his path.
Superman, Batman, and Aquaman are all doing fine, Hal Jordan is now the Spectre, and Takion is now the living embodiment of the eternal Source.

The Death Of Superman Trilogy Summary
It was not the first time a hero would die and return from the grave, but with Superman already seen by many as Godlike and near indestructible (kryptonite near death giving him Christ-like suffering), his ability to recover from death proves to be the final icing on the cake regarding his divinity.
Superman does his job and fights a creature of Hulk (Marvel comics) like strength.
It is a beautiful poignant look at how a society dependent on such a saviour might react to his death, but even as the story ends there is an indication of the inevitable return.

Superman fought only the unproblematic villain, who had chosen rather than been driven to a life of crime, and who lived in a vastly simplified society.

On one hand, Superman sacrificed his ethics, his oath to never kill again, as he realized that he had to put Doomsday down for good.
Superman not killing isn’t an easy plot device, it’s an essential part of his character.
