Deathlike Silence Productions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deathlike Silence Productions was an Oslo, Norway based independent record label founded in the late 1980s.
It was run by Euronymous, the former guitarist of the fl metal band Mayhem, until he was murdered by Varg Vikernes of Burzum in 1993.
Aarseth took the name from the Sodom song "Deathlike Silence" (from their 1986 release Obsessed by Cruelty).

Production: Reproduction of instruments captures tone and rhythm with precision in a live styled setting.
The studied reduction of songs from collection of these riffs to expressive structures with individual centering principles, however, is where Mayhem create their masterpiece and underline their fundamental concept of violent beauty and power in death.
Production: There are two segments of this disk, a live recording from Sarpsbourg in 1990 and a live in Lillehammer 1986 (?).

Maniac's vocals are trailblazing, insane screeches that do more for the effect of the album than anything else and Manheim pounds at his drums in a competent and impressive but not always precise fury.
Compositionally weak or dull, the songs suffer also from bad production as expected, but they have a large degree of that harsh underground magic, varying tempos and moods and they are historically interesting.
Although I was disappointed to find only two tracks from the De Mysteriis album, the energy, full production, Hellhammer's astoundingly powerful and precise performance on drums and Maniac's engulfing and utterly convincing evil vocals overshadow some of the compositional difficulties of the songs.

That location also housed a recording studio, where records were made by Mayhem and a number of other bands that were signed to Aarseth's independent label, Deathlike Silence Productions.
Also around this time, there was a rash of arsons directed at Christian churches in Norway—many of the buildings were hundreds of years old, and widely regarded as important historical landmarks—that Aarseth's circle claimed responsibility for inspiring, if not necessarily perpetrating.
Vikernes was sentenced to 21 years in prison and has since distanced himself from the fl metal movement, becoming involved in the Neo-Nazi movement and writing extensively on the subject.

Leaving death metal behind (he appeared on one 7" EP with Old Funeral) he made the acquaintance of one Euronymous of Mayhem and signed to the latter's Deathlike Silence Productions for his project band Burzum.
The man's extreme views and his vocal opinions give him enough credibility in the underground to make him a success and he is deemed involved in the Satanic Inner Circle of Norway which really is little more than a marketing fable.
By this time he is feeling restrained by Euronymous who leads in Norway and when Euronymous balked at giving him release from DSP a plot is hatched to coerce the man to let Burzum sign to Earache.

Abruptum had been in contact with Euronymous of DSP Records and Mayhem for awhile and he wanted to release their first album, they recorded it and got amazed (just as all the true maniacs around) of pure evil of the recording.
Euronymous was killed by a traitor and with the release of their second album "In Umbra Malaitae Ambulabo in Aternum in Triumpho Tenebrarum" they buried "Deathlike Silence Productions".
That second album is a strong sign of dark age that is on the way and that Abruptum will never die.

The band was offered a deal for it on Euronymous’ cult label Deathlike Silence Productions, but due to a lot of difficulties it was delayed.
During Attila’s stay in Norway more concrete things were sorted out between Tormentor and DSP, so finally Deathlike Silence were ready to put the album out, but before they came that far Euronymous was murdered, and the whole thing fell apart.

It is interesting that this album was originally released under Oystein Aarseth's record label (Deathlike Silence Productions), especially when you take into account the geographic and cultural differences between Japan and Norway.
An even more interesting fact is that this album was recorded in March of 1993, only a few months before Aarseth's murder.
The good production gives off that eerie sound that makes you want to listen to the album in the dark, provided that you do not get freaked out first.

The song Deathcrush ranks as possibly the most covered songs in any genre of heavy metal, with Encyclopaedia Metallum listing versions by a staggering 75 different bands within the metal genre, and there are other covers, including a dance cover.

This effort drew the attention of infamous Mayhem guitarist/Norwegian fl metal scene figurehead Euronymous, who signed them to his Deathlike Silence Productions imprint for their debut full-length.
Entitled Scorn Defeat, this album came out in 1993 after Euronymous' death and was the first Sigh recording to include guitarist Shinichi Ishikawa, with Satoshi moving strictly to drums and percussion.

The epic feeling, however, is not as strong as on the later album "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss"; the self-titled album has a much more raw atmosphere.

Certain moments on the disc are very powerful and hypnotic; this demonstrates the unique musical vision and power of Count Grishnackh.

Truly an act that defies description, to call Abruptum “musicians” is rather misleading, since their work cannot be categorized as true music.
Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me, the first of two Abruptum releases on his own beloved DSP label, is a fitting testament to that bold declaration.
Basically, what we have here is 50 minutes of self-inflicted torture, short bursts of HUGELY produced drums, and guitar/keyboard abuse divided into two 25 minute tracks.

Though maintaining the usual death metal obsessions in gore and violence, more sinister and nihilistic preoccupations with religion and paganism had emerged, influenced in part by Norse mythology, the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, Satanism (though Euronymous opposed the Crowleyan and LaVeyan brands of Satanism, in favour of a Christian perspective).
An initial release of 1,000 copies Deathcrush quickly sold out, and was later successfully repressed in 1993, by the Posercorpse Music label, since having been renamed Deathlike Silence Productions as a joint venture with Øystein's Oslo specialist record shop Helvete.
