  Deathray - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deathray is a band hailing from Sacramento, Calif. fronted by former Cake members Greg Brown and Victor Damiani and Dana Gumbiner, a musician formerly of the Sacramento indie band Little Guilt Shrine.
After a long battle, Deathray was dropped from Capricorn, but regained control of the masters from their album, which they have since released on their own label, Doppler Records.
Deathray's self titled album was released in 2000 with producer Eric Valentine (Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth, Citizen King).

 Sacramento News and Review December 07, 2000
Deathray sees some of America in a van and endures a series of mishaps as painfully comical as those portrayed in the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap and then returns home to Sacramento and starts writing new songs.
Deathray’s current world headquarters and studio, formerly a Model T-era gas station, is innocuously situated on a bleak stretch of Folsom Boulevard, between a cinderblock charismatic church and a casket warehouse.
One reason that Deathray may have been so adamant is that it was lurching toward the end of a long tour--in Boise, Idaho--when the label sprang the news that it would only release a clean, censored version, and the directive came over the phone.

 Ink 19 :: Deathray
Like poltergeists, some musical hooks can lay dormant for years (days at least), then suddenly return to activity, batting fragile stemware around the kitchen cabinets of your brain when you least expect it.
Deathray's "My Lunatic Friends" is one such song -- I'd dismissed the band as light pop fluff, but found myself mystified a few days later when I couldn't track the origins of that riff that wouldn't leave my head.
Fortunately, tortuous weeks later, the mystery is solved and all hail Deathray's spooky guitar/bass/drums/moog hauntings.

Some will undoubtedly take umbrage at The Deathray Davies' sacrilegious appropriation of the King of the Kinks' given name, but they'll be missing out on the fact that the name is more homage than mockery.
The group is essentially comprised of multi-instrumentalist John Dufilho, who started the Deathrays to keep him occupied when he wasn't busy with his other band, the now-defunct Bedwetter.
When a four-song demo, Drink with the Grown-Ups and Listen to the Jazz, landed him a spot at the 2000 South By Southwest music conference in Austin, he quickly assembled a live band featuring Bedwetter bandmate Jason Garner, Chomsky's Matt Kellum, and others.
