Debate club meetings are held once or twice a week (optional from club to club) and they start with brainstorming, an activity aimed at collecting ideas and arguments about the topic.

Speaking on the virtues of debating, Sheikh Nahyan said testing their ideas in debate, the students were improving their critical thinking, logic, organisation, public speaking and objective evaluation.
In two years the club debated a wide variety of topics such as "Should mothers be working women?", "Women at the helm make the workplace better", "Racism" and "Should Arab men take on the role assumed for women?" The club was founded by activities coordinator Lubna Zaidi as an activity for her English students.
The ZU debating society is chaired this year by May Altaei, a second-year student majoring in information systems.

 Estonian Debating Society
Estonian Debating Society (EDS) is a movement, started initially by a 1994 Open Estonia Foundation programme and officially registered as an independent NGO in 1998.
The purpose of EDS is teaching debating and rhetoric and introducing various ways of practicing them.
Debate as an intellectual dispute is the main activity in EDS - throughout the year various tournaments take place in both Estonian and English, lately also in Russian.

Finally, the highlight of UCL's debating calendar is the Foundation Dinner, held annually in March, a splendid formal dinner followed by the Foundation Debate, at which the motion "This House Has No Faith In Her Majesty's Government" is debated by guest speakers from the Houses of Parliament.
Originally, the Debating Society was called the Literary and Philosophical Society and resolved to debate "any subject not involving the subject of religious creeds." Of course this has changed somewhat down the ages.
Interesting to note, in the 19th century, the Debating Society decided that women should have the right to vote and alcoholic beverages "were to be encouraged".

The society not only stages debates in school (usually held fortnightly in the VI Form Quiet Common Room) but enters the major national debating competitions for schools with a considerable degree of success.
Debaters have taken these skills onto university including a former student becoming vice-president of the Oxford Union.

 Elkton - History
The minutes of the Elkton Debating Society are one of the treasures of the Historical Society of Cecil County.
They also debated as to whether or not a military character was a qualification for the Presidency, and the answer was "no".
There is some lapse in the records of the Society, for the next entry is on November 6, 1837 when at a meeting of gentlemen at Elkton Academy, a constitution was proposed for the "ELKTON DEBATING SOCIETY." This charter read almost exactly the same as those former charters with the exception of raising the dues.

The University of Stellenbosch Debating Society is one of the oldest debating societies in Africa, and the longest running in Southern Africa.
The society is 127 years old in 2003 and is still going strong, having two teams (Deon Prins and Pieter-Schalk Bothma along with Gideon Joubert and Willem Swiegers) in the ESL (English Second Language) final of the South African National Debating Championships hosted by WITS/RAU in 2003.
Chair, Gillian McNaught (and DCA for the tournament) led the adjudication team from Stellenbosch at Nationals, and the society proved conclusivly that it has the highest level of adjudication in the country by winning the trophy for the highest instiutional average of adjudicator ranking.
