ONR-supported researchers Deborah Jin of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Brian DeMarco of the University of Colorado at Boulder and JILA -- a joint research institute of NIST and CU -- report in the Sept. 9 issue of Science the achievement of the first Fermi degenerate gas of atoms.
Authors of the Science paper are Deborah Jin and Brian DeMarco.
Jin, a NIST physicist, is an associate fellow of JILA and an adjoint assistant professor of physics at CU-Boulder.

The fermionic condensate is a new phase of matter, first created on December 16, 2003 by physicist Deborah S. Jin.
In 2003, Deborah Jin of the same institute (JILA) and Rudolf Grimm of the University of Innsbruck were able to coax fermionic atoms into bonding to form molecular bosons and thus able to form a Bose-Einstein condensate but not a fermionic condensate.
On December 16 2003, Deborah Jin observed the pairing and formation of a fermionic condensate among fermionic atoms for the very first time.
